i have an 07 xb9r with the micron on it. the lower pipe from the rear cylinder broke at the bottom where it goes into the muffler. i'm hoping to find a welder that could weld something on for me, but i was wondering if anyone her might have some parts or something that could help me out?

The Microns are very sought after and highly regarded. Find a good stainless welder to fix it up for you. Shouldn't be that big a deal to get it welded. Parts are practically nonexistent, they aren't manufactured any more so unless you can find someone who's trashed the front pipe or muffler wanting to sell a good rear header, It'd be worth getting fixed.

Good luck

Get it welded, you are NOT going to find parts!

spend the $ on it and take it to some one reputable. like dean.

not "Big Jim's all-in-one muffler shop/nail salon/burger joint" that is just down the street from you.

What is the performance like on a 9 with the Micron?

Currently (happy) running a factory race pipe and am familiar with Jardine and Drummer.

Just letting him know it was done and that it shouldn't break any time soon. Based on the wear, I'd be looking at the wall thickness of the other pipe though. Should be about a .035" wall when new. I could be wrong, but I think it's about 20 gauge stainless. What I put on is 18 gauge or .049" wall thickness.

I do try for a solid weld, function over form, it's not pretty by any means.

Mine rusted itself together, if I can ever get it to come off I'll send it down so you can fix mine up, its seen better days and a few wrecks. Mine is just cosmetically rough though. : D

It is the best pipe you can get according to the American Sport Bike exhaust shootout.

Yeah, well, that's only because I didn't own a Buell at the time and hadn't started building exhaust systems just yet.....

Can you build a pipe similar to the micron (2 in, 2 out, internal crossover)? I'm talking about a set up from heads to tips. But most likely without the hydro-forming.

wasn't the hydro-forming the key to the performance it was putting out? or is their a downside to the hydro-forming?

Hydro-forming helps to ensure the thickness of the pipe is equal throughout. Regular bending stretches the pipe therefore thinning out the header walls on the outer apex of the bends.

I haven't tried sourcing the flanges for the headers yet, although I know they're out there somewhere. Yes, I probably could build it, my problem is finding time to do the building and testing of it. I don't have an XB at the house any longer, so I'd need to buy one to do it. I've shut off ordering again because I'm too far behind as it is. I've done that twice already this year earlier, this makes the 3rd time.

It's actually a tapered pipe if you measure it. I didn't, but I saw it when I had that one in hand. It could be replicated I'm sure, although the sales pitch (I think) was the internal diameter didn't get smaller like what would happen with a normal tubing bend. I don't know enough about the hydroforming process to be an "authority" on it, I've only read a tiny bit about it and found out how expensive the equipment was.

The shape, length, bends and taper all have an effect on how the motor will run. It's not rocket science or anything, but it's not the easiest thing to get perfect either.

Jbolt -- This is one that's somewhat similar in design for the muffler, but uses the stock headers. Stock headers merge into 2" tube, mine expands back out to 2.5" and then splits inside the muffler body. Performance gain so far, maybe 10% without tuning, which it would definitely need. It's a wee bit smoother transition than the modded magnaflow muffler, especially if you've seen the inside of one as pictured below.

Here's the magnaflow internal pipe. It's rather rough.

A person that had the ability to reproduce pieces of that header might have the key to making some money. I suppose they would have to pay Micron for the privilege though.

Micron no longer exist as a company. The Micron motorcycle exhaust business was just part of a larger engineering enterprise and was reasonably profitable. Unfortunately the overall business was in bad shape and went under, taking Micron with it.

does anyone happen to know if Micron went back into production?

Definitely not. Unfortunately stuff on the web stays there pretty much forever until somebody removes it or the domain registration runs out : (

Ah. The last I heard was they were going to concentrate on the auto exhaust business or something like that.

micron and the car side of things magnex were always going tits up, magnex did a deal with aston martin to supply their exhausts for a good few years, trouble was they didn't factor in the price of stainless going through the roof and they were committed to a price so they went broke again, my boss ended up buying some of their machinery
