I have a 03 xb9r and i just finished rewiring the ecm, fuse boxes, aux plug, and bank angle sensor to the tail of the bike. When I turn the key everything works ie lights turn on, horn works. But when I go to start it cranks but doesn't turn over. So I pulled a plug to see if it was getting any spark and it wasn't. So i traced the wires to the ignition coil and found that I had forgot to plug it in when I was finished rewiring. So I plugged it in and I still have no spark. I checked the bank angle sensor to make sure that wasn't keeping the bike from running. But it is getting power and I made sure it was upright(i've made that mistake before!). So if anyone has any ideas of what I should do next I am all ears. Thanks in advance!

I checked the fuses. None are blown.

What are normal problems to cause a bikes spark plugs not to spark?

Are you just looking at it or putting a screw driver in and grabbing hold of the metal to check? Did you check both plug wires. Check from where the plug wire goes into the coil. Then see if there is any power to the coil.

I only checked the front plug due to the pain of accessing the rear plug. But I pulled the plug out and used a screw driver and there was no spark on the front plug. I will check the spark plug wires and make sure there is still power going to the coil.

Make sure ground is getting to the coil too!

I just checked the spark plug wires to the plugs and the coil and they are on there good. I pulled the electrical plug off of the coil and checked to make sure it was getting power. I got a reading of 11 on my multimeter. Could it be a bad coil?

There is three wires going into the coil. I used the dark one as the ground and checked the other two and both sets of positive wires gave me a reading of 11.

Should be .5 - .7 ohms

I checked it on DC. Which gave me the reading of 11. Should I be checking it on ohms?

How do I check the ground for the coil? If it wasn't grounded properly would I still get the power reading that I am getting?

Measure the ohms between the ground wire and any solid bare metal part of the bike. Should be very low ~ less than .5 OHMS

I checked the ground wire at least the one that was giving me a reading. I'm pretty sure I did it right and I got a .12 OHMS reading. Does that sound right?

Be sure to inspect and clean the coil connections and look for carbon traces.

Have you tried to fetch any trouble codes?

You should check the resistance between the 2 outside pins on the coil(.5-.7 ohms) and also between the front and rear cylinder posts(5k-7.5k ohms). The center pin is +12vdc and should be checked in reference to ground.

Next thing to check would be the cam position sensor. You will need to verify the 5 volts between pins A and C on the cps connector.

Well my buddy took his working coil and plug off his bike and we swapped. I plugged it into my bike and got nothing. So I think that has ruled out that my coil is bad.

I checked the center pin like Terrys1980 said to do. And with the key switched on, the center pin reads 11v. Once I hit the starter, the center pins volts drop to 9v. Is this my problem?

The coil is receiving power just not enough to fire?

Update- I ran the codes on my bike and I got 11- TPS, 15- Airbox sensor, 16- Battery Voltage, 44- BAS and 53- ECM ROM.

So I am going to take the ECM to the dealer tomorrow to have them test it to see if it is bad. B/c I figure that all of these problems would originate at the ECM. Correct me if I'm wrong?

That sure is a lot of codes at once and I don't think all of that could possibly go wrong at once.

When you say you re-wired the ECM, what exactly did that entail?

If you re-wired the ECM, it could be simple as one wire being crossed causing these codes.

Oh and 9 volts is kind of low, might want to charge the battery.

"When you say you re-wired the ECM, what exactly did that entail?"

I cut all of the wires and then extended them so that I could put the ecm in the tail of the bike. I know 100% that I didn't cross any wires. I went over it a few times. I just got a new battery today and put it in. And the same result. So my guess is that maybe I need a new ecm b/c somehow it got fried?

I wonder if by making the wires longer (adding the extensions to put the fuse boxes and ecm in the tail) doesn't weaken the voltage to where it's screwing it all up?

Anyone know of a good place with the cheapest prices to get a new race ecm?

I doubt it's the extra length of wire. What could be possible is a cold solder joint. You would need to check the resistance on each wire.

Why not buy a stock ecm and copy the maps? I am pretty sure they are still using the original race maps and did not do any tuning on the 9 maps since the transition to E.B.R.

I'm going to buy a race ecm from a fellow board member and a new wire harness just in case.
