Okay, what would cause a stock 04 xb12 to backfire violently enough to stall the engine? Pulled over and everything checked out. Bike started right up and rode fine the rest of the way. But good god, that backfire cause people to duck and cover.

Timing would be my first guess.

Any fuel stream out the exhaust? One cylinder not firing for a few rotations followed by a boom. That would be a bad plug issue.

My theory:
Spark plug wire is bad and allows mixture to enter muffler without being burnt.
Mixture is finally ignited and pressurized exhaust stalls out the engine.
Recoil from the massive explosion juggles plug wire into a good position again = engine runs fine.

I suggest zapping the engine with a garden hose while it's running to see if it kills the engine.

Stock wires are probable the best value.

Contact Magnecor. They make a Buell replacement set. I replaced the OEMs when the bike started missing when wet. They fit perfectly and work very well. They were delivered quickly.
