Ok so I was out riding today at about 7:30pm. When I took off I noticed that I had my High Beams on, or so I thought by the indicator being on. I flipped the switch a few times and the indicator stayed on. I didn’t think much of it until I got behind a car and I had no head lights what so ever. I didn’t freak, I figured I had a blown fuse. When I reached my friends house I checked the fuses and they were good. What would case my high beam indicator to just stay on with no head lights whatsoever? This is pissing me off. Someone please help.

Bad ground under the flyscreen.

R = no flyscreen.

check your other thread.

Hint: turn everything on, reach under the fairing and wiggle the wiring. If headlights come on, it's the connector.

Did you check the lamps to see if they were actually still functional?

No light whatsoever. The only thing that is on is the high beam indicator light on the dash. The bike seems to run fine, I'm on my way out now to see if I can remove the front fairing. I'm not taking it to the stealership unless I have to.

The 03 service fo rmy bike shows the highbeam indicator is directly attached to the same wire that supplies power to the highbeam. If the light is on you should have power to the lamp. I would get a volt meter and start looking at the voltages on the positive wires (WHITE and YELLOW connected to the lamps) and then check the ground wires (BLACK connected to the fixture where the lamp seats).

Measure resistance between where the lamp seats and the frame, if anything greater than a few ohms, then you have trouble. The ground for the headlights is next to the steering stem on the fusebox side. I think it was a 1/2 inch bolt screwed into the frame with two wires attached to two ring terminals.

The low beam gets power from the same wire that powers the primary ECM voltage, so if you had no juice you would have no go. As mentioned there is a connector behind the fixtures, kind of in the middle of the plastic headlight mount.

To get to the headlight assembly, remove mirrors, remove turnsignals, remove two screws at bottom of windshield and pull the fairing off. The plastic headlight mount comes off with two bolts that hold the ECM in place, and then loosen (not remove) two more on the sides behind the lights. You can see the two bolts and the ECM in this picture:

The bolts o the sides have a slot that the nuts fit in to keep them from rotating so you only need to loosen them enough to slide the assembly off of the metal fairing mount. be VERY careful with the bolts that hold the ecm in place!!!!! they are self threading style so if you cross thread putting them back in you will wreck the fairing stay, it is soft magnesium so treat it nicely!

All of this info is from an 03 9R, hopefully it is similar enough to your bike that it helps. Also while you have that multimeter in your hand, check the lamps to make certain they really have continuity between the wire and the chrome/nickel mounting flanges I've seen lamps that you would swear are fine by looking at them fail the continuity check. Vibration can cause a failure down inside the metal where you can't see it, the glass and filament look fine so it is worth the minute to check both lamps.

I should also add that mirrors are 10mm nuts, turn signals are either a 12 or 13 mm nut and windshield screws were an imperial size.

Thinking back I think the ECM mounting bolts and the two side bolts were both 10mm too, but I could be wrong. A U joint and extension are handy for getting the side bolts loose, same can be said for the mirrors.

Way too many details.

Point bike to wall. Turn everything on.

Look underneath and find the wire connector.

Wiggle the connector and look at wall. (Actually, you might hear a click). You'll see the light go on and off.

Sit down beside bike, look up and make repairs.

And you're done.

Just had this happen to mine last week.

White plug in connector from headlights to main harness has a bad ground. Jumpered a wire around the plug for a temporary fix. I really should go buy a new plug. : )

Why?

The jumper has been working well on mine for over a year now.

If it ain't broke…
