I have the engine rotated to have the header and muffler ceramic coated, what else should I consider doing while it's apart this week?
The bike is a completely stock '04 XB12R with 19k on it.

Just make a good check of everything. Also, no time like right now for a good cleaning in those places seldom seen. While you clean, you can inspect.

replace base gaskets and rocker gaskets
clean!

I'm going to give it a good cleaning for sure.

How about spark plugs or wires? What's the best type to install?

Anyone have a good link on the breather mod? I've been told that'd be a good thing to do.

Breather is best done when engine is up since you can get to everything from the top and so that you can get hose lengths correct.

Plugs are easier, same with wires.

Lube throttle cables?

Check wires for chaffing?

Buy new O2 sensor.

Replace cylinder temp. sensor if you think it could be iffy.

Check connector where alternator connects to regulator to make sure it isn't melting.

in addition to the above maybe check out your intake manifold gaskets, rocker cover gaskets and PCV valves and grommets.

I haven't noticed any problems with the intake leaking, are they prone to leaking after the motor gets some miles on it?

Yeah do the intake gaskets while your at it. My '03 bolt leaked at 10k miles... friend with a harley leaked at 15k miles.

Or if it ain't broke, don't fix it. 42K on my XB12 with no intake leaks yet.

Yes on if it ain't broke.

Just have a look, should be almost flush and even spaced.

Check the bolts/screws are tight.

No need to do more but very hard to check in normal position.

add Thermotec heat barrier to the inside of the frame...American Sport Bike has it for about $60 dollars. I have a pattern for it to make it easier to install as well. I've been meaning to post what I did but haven't gotten to it yet...keeps the heat off the fuel in the tank...easy to do when engine is rotated, impossible otherwise. -TK

go ahead and replace your lifters!

I rotated mine at about 22k, did the ceramic header, the top gaskets, plugs and wires, breather route, blah blah...

I thought to myself, I should replace my lifters even though they sound just fine.

Decided "if it aint broke, don't fix it"

Well less then a thousand miles later I start hearing the slight "tick" of a lifter. After another 1k its pretty darn loud even over my Drummer pipe.

I should have just bought the lifters and did it then!

So sometimes thinking ahead will help you out!

Intake manifold seals. Much easier to replace whilst engine is rotated.

TurboSchwinn, can you e-mail me the heat barrier pattern?
joshuawinter2004@sbcglobal.net

I took the exhaust off for ceramic coating because I really want to reduce heat around my legs so that heat barrier sounds really good. Thinking about a right side scoop as well to help cool the rear cylinder but don't have the cash to spring for the nice one that American Sport Bike sells.

I haven't seen any intake or lifter problems on the bike and it only took an hour to drop the engine so if they crop up later, I'll have a go at them then.
