I have been told that if a gear in the trans goes bad, it is necessary to take the engine off the frame to work on the trans.

it is worse then taking the engine out of the frame. you have to pull the heads and split the cases.

If all the parts are still good, a few hundred in gaskets and scuffing the cylinders and new piston rings.

Otherwise lots more depending on what is damaged. I'm in about $1300 and now need to get valves, guides, seals, and probably valve seats to get back on the road.
