anyone done one? what to expect?

thinking about doing one on Sunday at Motorsport Ranch just south of Houston.

personally, not looking forward to leathers . . . especially rented leathers . . .

and I need a new rear tire for my xb9s, thinking pilot road 2's maybe, I don't do a lot of turning on my commute so . . . just want something to last a long time, not a track tire.

I run the Pilot Power 2cts, I think they are better suited to a track day than the pilot roads. I did a couple track days with them last year and was happy with them.

yeah, but I don't want to do track days a lot, I think it'd help my street riding a lot but I'm not going to be a track day hobbyest biker. I'm not going to be invested in track day equipment so I might just skip the whole thing . . .

The Pilot Road 3 is a 2CT tire. I just had a set installed on my bike and love them. They are easier to turn and lean with VS the Corsa 3.

In that case you might be better off with one of the rider instruction courses (if you haven't already taken one).

And if what you want to do is learn, then a racing school would be better than a track day.

Do the track day, you don't need to invest a dime other than admission and gas.

Check the regulations from the trackday organizer, often you don't need leathers for novice classes.

Don't worry about tires, put whatever the hell you want on, you probably won't be outriding your rubber your first time anyway. Even if you are, you can get your tires changed at the track to something better suited. Race tires will get you in trouble if you don't have tire warmers. They take longer to warm up, and if you aren't riding hard enough you may even not get them warm enough to get full grip. You would slide out like cold street tires.

Either way, get you and your bike to the track, ride the piss out of it, you will love it : )

I had the same take it or leave it feeling as you, Did one 2 days ago. Best money I ever spent to ride! Do yourself and your bike a favor..
Borrowed leathers are fine as long as you can get in and out of them. Too big is not a big deal.
Get whatever tire you want to use before you go then ride the bike to get used to the feel.
In a few sessions You'll find yourself riding faster than you ever expected.

wonder if I can get through the day on my almost bald tires now?? been that way for months now don't seem to be getting worse

I think they are dunlaps, whatever is stock with the bike. the wear areas are showing pretty good now

You won't pass tech unless you got a healthy amount of tread left. Something in the area of 75-80%, so if you have to even question your tires, they are shot.

Do yourself a favor, get in touch with Jdugger (PM), he is also from Dallas and does tons of trackdays. He would be your best bet to help you get ready for the track, as odds are he has done some laps on whatever one you want.

did the track day, but I did it on my cruiser cause I didn't want to spend the money on a new tire, well could only find one place that would put it on from me just taking my bike there, harley place, wanted $95 labor and $239 for the tire. um, no and I don't have anyone to help me get the tire off last weekend to take it someplace and get it done much much cheaper and get a better yet cheaper tire.

glad I didn't pay full price for the track day though, fun to practice turning but I didn't really care about going faster and faster, on my commute to work there's like 3 turns for 52 total miles, so it was very cool to practice turning at a good speed. but after going around the same track for half the day (maybe 20 times or so) I was kinda done with it, I was kinda bored cause I can't really ask for instruction because they are all on sport bikes and I'm stuck on my little Suzuki S-50 cruiser so I'm not going to follow one of them around the track, idk, after awhile I just realized I wasn't having that much fun and would have more fun just riding home so that's what I did.

I don't regret going at all, but I'm going to save my money for taking the intermediate MSF course next, I don't think track days are for me, even on my buell.

also no one told me it was going to be a whole ordeal kinda thing, like I shoulda had tape to cover up my lights and other kindsa stuff, felt like I shoulda brought my own pit crew or something(and my friends had left for vacation the day before). I had from Wed until Saturday to take advantage of the 50% off offer and only decided on Friday to do it after I called and asked if it would be okay if I brought my cruiser, and got the confirmation email that explained everything a bit Saturday evening at like 5pm so didn't have a lot of time and knew this was going to be one of those wtf kinda days. still it was fun until it got old then it wasn't.

Wait, you brought a cruiser to a track day?? No offense, but what made you think this would be a good bike for the track (I'm sure someone will flame away)? I'm sure you're not the first, but I would have loved to see this. Methinks this is part of the reason you didn't get what you expected. That Boulevard is heavy, slow turning, has little ground clearance, and depending on your tires, potentially (probably) little traction. And then there is that brake. You'd have more fun on a smaller, lighter bike that requires less work from the rider. I'm sure that thing took some serious muscle to throw around!

That being said, the internet is your friend. A quick search will tell you all you need to know as far as preparation. It sounds like you could have been better prepared...which is on you.

You're going to find the same repetitive nature to every track day at every track: nature of the beast. The idea here is to develop a telepathic understanding of the track and conditions so you can hone your skills in a controlled environment. Most riders aren't good enough to do this on a track as complex as most good roads.

As far as the money...if you're not up to spending money on a rear tire, I'd stop now. Seriously. Track riding demands attention of all sorts. Short changing that will only cost you later.

you're right, the not being prepared thing, all on me.

I didn't get what I expected? I didn't know what to expect (which is one reason why I didn't want to spend $300+ to get a rear tire) I tried something new, for 50% off, hell why not.

I knew taking a cruiser to track wasn't optimum, but spending almost twice what I normally would for a tire was out of the question. so that's what I had.

never planned on making track days a hobby or anything, just wanted to see what they were all about. trying to explore all the aspects of motorcycling, eventually I'll even do some long distance trips, maybe even off roading, idk, I'm welcoming whatever opportunities come my way.
