I'm sure this has been discussed before, so I apologize in advance. Background - 2007 XB12SST, 1,000 miles. Bought it new last August. Jardine RT1 pipe, Erik Buell Racing racing ecm, K&N filter and TPS reset using ECM Spy about 5 or 6 times. Replaced plugs two weeks ago. Problem - Starts missing and stumbling between 3k and 4k rpm at steady throttle. Always after warming up completely and fan switching on. Can get through it by rolling on throttle. Longer I ride though, the worse it gets and starts stumbling above 4k rpm. Usually will clear out by rolling on throttle but sometimes runs out of juice around 5500 but not always. Battery is original and my thinking is that is probably the culprit but I'm wondering if it just overly rich.

What does ECMspy say your AFV is at after this happens?

sounds like it is lean i would do some data logging and see what is going, and check for intake leak and check o2 to see if it is working right

Good point Froggy, haven't checked the AFV afterwards. Made sure it was 100% when i did TPS reset but I'll check now.

Another piece of info that I forgot to mention - when i changed plugs, they looked pretty black and sooty so I don't think it is lean.

I'm interested to see how you fix it, I have similar problems.

Gonna troubleshoot this weekend after I get back home. I still have a funny feeling that it's electrical...bare wire somewhere, weak battery, bad ground, etc. I say that because it only happens after bike is fully warmed up and fan kicks on. I also wonder about the seat pressing on the ecm...

black and sooty is rich not lean. I don't think you have an air leak it would be white and powdery.I would get a stock ecm in there and see what happens even if you borrow someones just to check,

The Jardine pipe seems to make the bike run rich (counter-intuitive, I know). My plugs were also black and sooty, but after I put the stock exhaust on the bike, reset the AFV and TPS, and replaced the plugs, there was no deposit on the plugs after 1000 miles. Regardless that's not the problem.

Did you add a servo-emulator after you put the Jardine pipe on the bike? I'm not familiar with the Erik Buell Racing ECM, but if it still uses the interactive exhaust, that could explain the stuttering at 3K RPM.

same issue here with stock ecm, and 3 different versions of the ebr ecm. The latest cal. file that i have (sent ecm for update in april2011) STILL has the stumbling and lurching, etc. but at least it will idle and i can actually pull out of an intersection without the cough and stall mid-intersection that i always had before. I'm very interested on how you solve this. I think the only thing to be done is a custom tune...seems to be a timing curve/fueling issue in that rpm range.

Definitely check the electrical - could be a loose ground connection.

Do you ever get any check engine light/trouble codes?

Air filter clean?

Not too much oil in air filter?

Plug wires are good and not contacting anything metal?

Throttle body to cylinders flush and tight?

Still haven't found the problem. Gonna check throttle body this week. Also gonna check the fan because it only starts scting up when the fan kicks on. No problem when the fan is off.

Just noticed the range you ride in. That's too slow for this engine.

Was it better just after you changed the plugs?
