Has anyone used the race muffler without upgrading their ECM and filter? Just curious.

drummer works just fine with the stock ecm. dont see any possible reason that a factory race muffler would cause a problem.

i did it, and you will get a LOT of backfiring on deceleration.

i think we need a 3rd party stand alone user mappable ecm. i will volunteer my bike for road testing the pre-production unit(s).

Xblue, did you put in the race ECM after and did the backfiring go away? Is the backfiring the annoying type or the kinda' cool sounding type?

the race ecm eliminated all but about 5% of my backfiring, to the point where only extreme engine braking made it pop.

the drummer does eliminate all of it however.

it's kinda a nice sound, but the type the local police would have frowned upon.

Thanks. So do you remember if the power had a noticeable change in the lower RPMs (better or weaker) without the ECM upgrade, or did it seem the same, just louder? Are you using the Drummer now? If yes, do you like it better?

without a doubt i prefer the drummer. the sound is more of a low rumble and the last of the backfiring is gone.

i did the 12 airbox cover with the drummer so it's hard to say...the combination of the two gave a definite improvement in throttle response at low and mid range.

I have the full "Drummer Race Kit" and I still get backfires from time to time on hard engine brake deceleration. Now that I think about it, it did it with the all stock set up, too.

Never really bothered me, Just my $.02.

You can always just leave the throttle on a tiny little bit during deceleration if you have to keep the backfires at bay like when slowing down past the local constabulary.
I like the sound of it popping off now and then.

I like a little popping now and then too. I have heard my stock setup do it a little now and then. I don't think it would hurt to try out the muffler for awhile, and see what it is like. I don't think it would cause it to run lean because I'm at a fairly high altitude (4,600 ft.). So it might actually help mine a tiny bit in the power department. I'm fine with the power the bike has now, because I have other bikes to use for the Hyper-speed rush. This is the main reason I asked, because I want to keep as much bottom-end as I can, but with a little more sound. I also like the looks of the race muffler too. Like a Stingray Corvette with sidepipes. Thanks.

If you want some bottom end and a little more sound you couldn't beat the Drummer, bonus is more top end too and wilder sound when you wind it up. there is no other alternative. Kcuf the race kit.

i bought my 9r used with a race muffler and air filter. It did not have the race ecm. The bike ran fine no problems. I then put on the race ecm and reset the tps. the bike dosen't seem to be any different aside from a little bit more popping on decel. Thats Ok i guess

Buellin: What exactly do you mean by "the bike doesn't seem to be any different" going to race ECM from stock. Do you mean it didn't help add any power? I bought a used 9R with race pipe and just found out it might not have the race ECM. I was under the impression that the ECM would boost the power a little, with the "complete race kit". Is this not the case?

As far as backfire on decel, my bike can turn into an air popper if I want it to. Rev to about 4k or more and don't upshift. Let off the throttle and it just pops and crackles like crazy as you approach a stoplight.... I love it!

I was not impressed with the the ecm. Maybe I was expecting to much. It does run different, but I really can't say if its better or worse. The popping is cool though.

Thanks for the update. DaveS found out my hand written RACE ECM is probably the real deal. So I guess I already have it. If it wasn't though I don't know that I would have bought one, based on your comments and other impressions here. I would be expecting a lot from that $200, but the increased airflow on both ends of the engine are probably the biggest contributors to increased power.

I have a 12R, and would love to improve the exhaust note, I see a lot of you commenting are on 9's. I am concerned about this interactive muffler, it seems to be impressive ( on paper) and am concerned that a change may not be for the better ( improved performance ) Anyone? Thanks

The local dealer told me that on the 12 the race kit only adds power up high and actually decreases power down low because it removes the fancy muffler thing. They recommend the race kit for 9 but not for the 12 unless you actually want to race it. Of course I've only ridden a demo 12R stock so I'm not an expert by any means.
