Hi guys I took my bike to a couple of shops and told me that the oil that is leaking from behind the pulley can not be fixed until the transmission comes appart and they see what lease could be wrong. I have been told that the engine needs to come out in other to have access to the trasmission. they told me to fix it 2000 to 2500. so I am seeking advise on what to do. first, is taking the engine the only way to rebuilt a tans on the XB. second, is so is it worth fixing third, do you think i should sell it as is fourth, should i break it down and sell it as parts. it was a great bike until the trans problem. the bike does start, so the engine seems to be fine. any help is appreciated guys  | ||

First thing is to pull the little black cover off and look directly at the front sprocket. There is a seal there (removed in this pic) that can and will leak. Ive had to replace one on each of my XB's and they only cost 2 or 3 bucks   # 10 is what you will be looking for if thats the issue. | ||

DO NOT PANIC! Get the service manual when you get the seal. Read it. Install the seal. It's easy, inexpensive and educational. | ||

If you know FOR SURE WITH YOUR OWN EYES where the leak is coming from, disregard my post. If you are just trusting the shop, try this- get some UV leak dye. Should be for gas engines, I picked some up at Napa for like $3 for a little bottle, more than enough for my XB9. Borrow a blacklight from a hippie friend. Put full application in your swingarm, run the bike, turn off your regular garage lights and turn on the blacklight. I took pics... the UV-stained oil will glow where it is leaking and show you exactly where the leaks are. | ||

Remember that transmission and engine oil are completely separate so you might need to run that leak test twice. You could narrow it down by telling us which one gets low on oil. I'll give you $1000 if the title is clean  If you decide to part it out, you should probably try to fix it first, if you can't fix it then it is half way apart. hi guys i forgot to mention that while the engine was on while on neutral i could move the bike but like every 3 feet or less i felt a "clunk" kinda sound. thsi is what leads me to think its more then just the seal. I will give the seal a try but if its not that can someone tell me if its necessary to take the engine transmittion off the bike do to any kind of repait to the trans. thanks | ||

as far as the leak i know its coming from the back of the pulley on the pic where Hammer is pointing out. i know this becuase it was a milky white oil, which the bike tech told me it must be becuase somehow water got into the mix maybe from condensation. thanks | ||

Its possible that the bearing from the main drive gear is shot ,and thats why it started leaking! (you written in the first picture that there was some play in the pulley) Did you removed the belt and looked how much it was? | ||

Those seals go out. I had to replace mine already at about 20,000 miles. The hard part was trying to figure out where the leak was. I had to resort to actually cleaning the bike. Changing the seal was sooo easy. |
