hey guys,

I started on a buell blast about a year ago, switched over to an SV650 and am feeling the buell calling me back.

I've found a local guy that may be interested in trading his '03 xb9 for my '01 sv650.

Here's the catch... He claims it has an xb12 "top end" swapped over (jugs, pistons, heads, injectors).

correct me if i'm wrong but, the 1200 is just a stroked 987 right? are the compression ratios lower on the 12 therefore, losing power when swapping xb12 pistons into an xb9?

His bike has 30k miles on it but, only a few hundred on the new motor.

i LOVE xb bikes. LOVE THEM. but, I take extended trips on my bike and to be honest, I'm a little concerned with the reliability of a bike with such extensive motor work...

what do you guys think?

Are you sure he didn't mean a 1200 kit. They do that with Sportsters all the time. I'm sure the kits exist for the XB. It would basically be a big bore motor instead of stroked.

Just swapping to 1200 parts doesn't make much sense to me.

it doesnt make much sense to me either. It seems sketchier the more I talk to him about it... He is really unsure of what all has been done to it...

from what I understand, xb12 pistons are low compression. If he swapped over everything from the 12 except for the crank, it would basically be a (downgraded) low compression xb9 motor.

He says he does not know what crank is in the motor...

I'm hoping it's an aftermarket 1200cc kit... otherwise, someone really frigged up this motor

You can't turn a "9" motor into a "12" motor by swapping pistons and cylinders from a "12" into a "9".....same bore size.

You are correct that "12" pistons in a "9" would be a low compression motor....might work good for a turbo....but not worth a crap for N/A.

On the other hand a big bore "9" would be a really nice motor, but due to cost, not many people do it.

I would sure want exact details of what was done. You would likely need custom fuel mapping also. A lower compression motor would be nice only in that you would probably be able to run regular gas.

Another question would be WHY was this work done? I'm guessing something got FUBARed that took out at least one head and piston (broken valve?). From there... repair on the cheap? If this guy isn't giving up credible info, I would walk from that deal.

Ask where the work was done. You might be able to get some answers from them.
If he claims he did it himself then walk away.
