I ordered some carbon fiber for my xb and have noticed from "used" pictures that the bolt holes get worn and torn. Is this preventable? The carbon fiber was rather expensive and I'd like to preserve it for as long as possible. Thanks! | ||

Try the clear plastic washers that Buell uses on the fairing and so forth . I have never had a problem with my CF , with some kind of plastic washer used .  | ||

Seriously - you DO need to do something to distribute the stresses out around the holes. Rubber washers on each side of the carbon can really help (think of "shock mounting" if you need to visualize) Otherwise if you can do fiberglass work, you CAN layup some 2-ply doublers on each side to beef up the mounts - but that means you're going to have to paint the carbon since the spots will now stand out. Unfortunately, carbon is HELLA stiff (rigid, high modulus... whatever big words) it's just not tolerant of abuse. Rubber washers are in the Lowes hardware drawers in their nuts-and-bolts aisle. |
