I'm looking seriously at two XB9R's right now, one is a leftover 03, one is an 04. What are the differences, besides the belt and colour?

Thanks

If they are both XB9R's aren't they exactly the same?

i believe the passenger pegs are about 2 inches lower, the belt is updated, the belt gaurds were changed to allow easier wheel removal (they made them alot smaller) 2 year warrenty i think thats about it

Good luck! I know you've been looking for a while. I got my used '03 9R a week and a half ago and I love the damn thing! It's a huge upgrade from the Suzuki I had.

Thanks guys.

I forgot about the passenger pegs, and didn't know about the belt guard. I saw the wheel colour in the brochure.

Warranty is a good point.

420, yeah I'm giving my current ride to my wife to learn on--may be a mistake, she may want the Buell before it's paid off...

In my opinion, the most important difference between the 03 and the 04 is the mirrors, as this is a safety issue. The 04 mirror stalks are about 30% longer. The 03 mirror stalks are pretty much useless as you cannot see around your shoulders. If you choose the 03, this is an easy fix - you can order and swap out for 04 mirrors.

One other small difference is the 04 has a seat with more padding.

I bet the 04 has the updated (voltage regulated) speedo sensor as well (but have not verified this).

All the factory mirrors on all bikes are a hazard. Slap on a set of bar end mirrors, I can see most of my left hand blind spot with my right hand mirror, they are that good.

Has anyone actually seen an 04 XB9R in a dealership? I haven't.

I asked our D.M. about the '04 Nines and if they had been shipped to Europe because of the 63% increase in sales there... or if production was just more focused on the Twelves. I was told there were a lot more Twelves made than Nines. They're out there. I haven't seen one though?

Is it true that the Stock driver's seat on the 04 has more padding?

I might switch out. The touring seat was too high.

Yeah, a dealership here couldn't locate me an 04 XB9 anywhere so that would explain it. I'm very happy with my 03

You missed a big change:

The 2004 XB9's didn't just get a new belt. The better belt has a different pitch, therefore, the sprockets are also new. It's the same Goodyear belt and sprockets found on the XB12's. Because of this change, the 2004 belt cover is needed, of course.

It would appear that they upgraded the leftover XB9's and stopped building them altogether once they started building the XB12's.

Mike.

Xb9er you not right. I got a 2004 XB9R manuafactured late January (by the quality controls then left all over it) and complianced 10th March 2004. It is #71 of the international bikes and was the first to Australia. So they are still making them. About a month ago 5 more were brought into Aust but I still haven't seen any on then roads and these have later build dates than mine. As for the differences. Mirror stalks are longer, passenger foot pegs lower, 2 year warranty, 12 belt and pulleys, wheel color, decal color, the ECM can handle an exhaust valve, Aust model has increase in stock power due to difference compliance laws, Aust stock model is louder. There was some talk at my dealership that they thought the pistons were the same as the 12 items (ie lighter). No one has been able to prove otherwise yet (someone with a 2004 parts manual may be able to look it up).

Not a whole lot, but maybe another 1/4 inch of padding. I was going to order the touring seat and Daves suggested this for about $65. Thinking of getting rid of your touring seat?
