I have searched everywhere and done everything mentioned. I still cannot get ECMSpy to work. I have tried several drivers and taken the cable apart and put it back together with new pins.

I made sure the ignition is in the on position and the kill switch is on run. I have tried every combination of starting ECMSpy, connecting the cable to the bike, connecting the bike to the laptop. None of them work.

I have used ECMSpy in the past w/o issues. Anyone have any tips? I just bought this bike and it is unridable until I can reset the TPS.

So, to sum it up here is the issue:

-I connect everything
-It says COM 3 Opened
-As soon as I do anything (Keys on, Diagnostics, Trouble Codes) it says transmission timed out

If anyone lives near Lowell MA, I could use hand with this.

Is your bike's battery good?
Some here have disconnected the headlights fuse so that they can "talk" to the ECM for longer without the engine running.

I thought the bike couldn't be running for ECMSpy to work.

you can use Spy with the bike running. More importantly tho, the key MUST be on and the kill switch set to run. Then click the keys icon.

I had the key on and the kill switch to run. Like I said I have used it in the past on another bike to reset the tps and static timing. I have never done anything with the bike running. I will give it a shot though to see if it's battery related.

Still no luck. Here is what I've tried:

Battery tender, ignition in the on position, and kill switch in the run position= Transmission Timed Out

Battery tender, bike running= Transmission Timed Out

I believ the battery is a bit flat as it had a hard time turning over with the battery tender hooked up. I am going to give it some time to charge and try again. If that doesn't do it, I am out of answers.

Still no luck after 4 hours on the tender.

It isn't a voltage problem if your bike can run.

Do the auto connect thing so it scans your com ports, my guess is that it isn't com3 anymore, maybe com4 or 5 or something. You can also manually pick the com port in the drop down box.

The cable will be listed in the Windows Device Manager, you can verify which port it is in there.

I have tried that several times. I will give it another shot though.

There is definitely something wrong with the charging system. The engine light came on on the way home from buying it. It wouldnt turn over after I cut the engine. Luckily there was a HD shop nearby and I was able to get a Buell battery (it had a wet BMW battery in it). Considering the new battery was basically dead after an hour ride, I'm guessing either the stator or voltage regulator is bad.

Was the new battery fully charged before you installed it and used it for the first time?

I have no way of knowing, but it cranked strong. The battery still hasn't fully charged, so it was pretty much dead after that ride. There is definitely something wrong here.

I took you advice and switched to COM 1. I did the hyper terminal test and it worked fine. Dame problem. It shows COM 1 Open, but the gives Transmission Timed Out.

I am at a loss at this point. I have no idea why this isn't working. Anyone else have any advice?

I have also read some people saying ECMSpy will ask you what bike you have. Mine has never done that. Am I doing something wrong?

Unfortunately, I was correct. The voltage regualtor is smoked.

I am going to have to get this squared away before attempting to do anything else with ECMSpy.

The old versions asked what bike you have, newer ones auto detect.

You can't get the old connector VR anymore, it was replaced by the newer style. Your problem may just be the connector itself and not the VR.

The VR itself is fried. The backing is all bubbled out and dry rotted. I ordered the VR/plug today. $89.95 ouch! Oh well, I will get this fixed and then a local member is coming out with his known good cable/ECMSpy to help. I will keep this thread updated.
