okay, trying to change mufflers, the axle seems to be stuck, does the bike have to be on a lift for the axle to turn out 15 turns? yes I loosened the pinch bolt, there's a little story there too but for now, help on getting the axle nut thing to turn, already broke a ratchet trying to get it loosened

help!

thinking about getting an air compressor and using some power tools

Ok, I missed something. _WHY_ are you loosening the axle to change the muffler?

cause it says so in the book, I kinda thought that was odd too, it seems it's mainly to get the belt tensioner out of the way so you can get to the bolt on the rear clamp, cause it's way in there, but I'm wondering if I can't just get an extension or something to get a socket down in there without messing with the axle thing or the tensioner

If the clamp is still on top, then you may need to remove the tensioner. That said a 1/4 drive with extensions and U joint may do the trick without messing with the tensioner.

Sounds like an application of never-seize was missed. Once you get it out, you ought to follow the manual there and apply never-seize and the front axle (LH threads there), too.

I reversed the rear muffler straps to have the threaded part on the left side of the bike last time I was there.

That's the way I did it too. You have to take off the front pulley cover and the chin fairing, but that's about it. Once the clamps are off, just slide them around to the position you want them in.

The rear axle has normal threads. Turn the rear as you would normally to get it out. The FRONT axle has left hand threads.

If I were you, I'd try to shoot some penetrating oil in there and then use a big honking breaker bar. I've got a 1/2" drive 18" long breaker bar for situations like this. If you could heat the swingarm while cooling the axle simultaneously, that would help, too.

Oh yeah, don't forget a little anti-seize on the axle before re-install.

okay, got the muffler changed, just needed more leverage and proper tools, back to stock, changed to a stock ecm too, and the only thing that's just a bit worrisome is that it occasionally cuts out on me occasionally, usually at idle or in neutral, I haven't done a TPS reset or anything with the stock computer that's in there now, any ideas if that's all it needs? seems to run slower too, I do have a K&N air filter is that letting to much air in?

I did something else stupid too, I stripped the threads in the hole for the pinch bolt, any suggestions on how to fix this? Heli Coil? can I retap it the same size? they are the top threads though, the pinch bolt still goes in but there's nothing on the top to tighten to.

Which pinch bolt, the one on the axle? That would be bad and you should get a helicoil in there fast just to make sure the axle doesn't spin out (shouldn't but you never know).

I forget since I haven't even looked at my cycle since November, does the bolt hole go all the way through the swingarm? If not drilling it for a helicoil is going to be impossible since the drill and helicoil are much larger than the bolt that goes in.

i think you'd have a harder time finding a swing arm than actually having a hard time replacing it! lol

(and an extra swing arm is something i dont have : ) haha

before I go all crazy with buying swing arms, can't I re-tap the hole? or helicoil it? JB weld? what are my options?

well I can't tell you how many miles I rode without a pinch bolt in the swing arm but it was a lot....
I wouldn't go getting your panties in to big of a bunch...
You would need to ride backwards for a ton of miles to make the axle even think about backing out.

It might over tighten its self... but I don't think you need to worry about it backing out

I agree, there are millions of bikes out there without pinch bolts in the swingarm. Tubers included.

cool, I'll re-tap it the best I can and check the torque on the axle once and awhile, and I think a TPS reset will take care of the rough idle/stalling problem, got a cable on the way hopefully with the program as well.

good to know, did you get the Cable/map package on ebay?....

I had read someplace that a few guys who bought the cable on ebay had some problems getting it to connect to the PC. Hopefully yours works good! if not I'll find the thread for you that described how they got it to work

At the beginning of Spring last year I got a new set of tires.
At the end of Spring I needed a new set.
When I was taking off the rear tire I noticed I hadn't replaced the pinch bolt.
The rear axle was just as tight as it was with the bolt in place.
