Well, I picked up a Jardine almost exactly three weeks ago. The dealer even opened the box to make sure that the old style aluminum brackets had been replaced with the new steel ones. Said the old ones were cracking. Liked the low end sound, but it sounded kinda stupid at higher RPMs. Really hated the huge hole in the power that I got at 3,700 RPM. Day before yesterday, when I got home from work, I put the sidestand down and noticed it was touching the chin fairing. Lousy bracket broke! While riding this way, the center portion of the fairing was damaged by heat by being forced into the header at the muffler/header joint. I pulled the whole system and found that the two brackets -- while both steel, are made from different grades of steel with the broken one being more of an alloy. Anyway, while it was swinging in the breeze, it chewed up the side of the can a bunch, so it's going back tot he dealer today. I stuck the race can back on, and I'll be picking up a XB9 can to send off to Brian to be Drummed up a bit.

Who else has the Jardine, and have your brackets broken yet? How many miles?

I have had the Jardine pipe on my XB12 for over a year and just under 5000 miles. No problems yet.

If the pipe boke send it back to Jardine and they will refund your money or give you another pipe no questions asked.

Their customer service is great.

Only one of our customers has had a broken STEEL bracket, but he broke 2 in short order. Jardine is aware and is building him a new bracket. I will forward this info to them as well. Steve, can you send me a picture of the failure? If like the other one I have here, left bracket, just ahead of the front mounting bolt?

Jardine is working very hard to make these right but it appears they might not quite have it yet. So far, their customer service has been very good, they've been doing right by everyone, and I have no reason to believe they won't continue to from the assurances they've given me.

Al

Al, you're right -- left bracket. In comparing the two brackets, the right one is made of multiple pieces of bar stock welded together, while the left one is either stamped or water-jet cut and as may be required for the duty rating of their processing equipment, is of a much lighter grade steel -- probably an alloy than the right bracket. While at the dealer, one of the employees, who has been through several sets of aluminum ones, said his stell (left) bracket broke a couple weeks ago as well. This was on a 12. Another employee had one break on his 9. While getting my tires changed later in the day, I spoke to somebody who said his friend had one on an XB and his bracket broke as well. Left side -- didn't know of this rash of problems, and was actually being requested to pay for a new bracket. I informed him of the situation (his is only 3-4 weeks old as well), and suggested he demand new brackets, a new kit (if the can is damaged), or a complete refund as this WILL happen again in a few weeks.

Anyway, Al -- I returned the whole kit the other day, so I can't take photos. I was actually at the dealer for 90 minutes while waiting for Travis at Jardine to call back, then he was on the other line, then he was supposed to call back, then when he did, he wanted me to wait with my thumb up my with no bike and no money while the dealer sent the pipe and brackets to them so they could determine if a refund was in order... In order? The think self destructed in three weeks! I think that merits a refund! He claimed to know of only 5 failures with the steel bracket. BS! That's customer service? I don't want to deal with a company that doesn't even admit to a problem that I know is bigger than they are admitting to. This is a serious safety hazard and they should recall all their brackets -- whether you've had a problem or not. I'm still stuck with a ruined chin spoiler, but I can't expect their warranty to cover that.

Sorry for the long rant -- just blowing off steam.

Steve.

2k,

I too have a Jardine on my 9R ... And I too have been through several of the mounting brackets. Up until about 6 weeks ago, Jardine kept sending me aluminum ones to replace the left side that kept breaking. I'm now on my 2nd steel bracket for my left side and (knock on wood) no problem so far. However, the first steel bracket I had for the left side only lasted 3-4 days (not sure when it actually broke before I noticed it). Anyway, I finally got the girl who's handling my problem to agree to replace my chin fairing. Mine has the same sort of damage you described (melted to the headers), about 3 times over from either one or the other brackets breaking. If you truly want your fairing replaced, try to deal with someone other than Travis (he started out handling my problem as well). If you have to talk to him again, tell him he can keep his crappy t-shirts for the customers who like getting screwed! Good luck.

Love the Jardine on XB9gRl's bike. The pipe is great. What they need to do to fix the mounting problem is work out a brace in the front to minimize vibration. I don't care what you build it out of, with that much unsupported area, it'll break...

I thought attaching a hangar from the front of the chin fairing to the collector would solve the whole shebang!
