Greetings all, I've been lurking for about a month on the XB board. I just retired from the military after 21 years and the Commander (wife) says I can buy a new XB12S for myself. The Harley scene was getting old as everybody and their brother who has the cash thinks they are a bad*** after they put on a leather vest so I'll be selling my Wide-Glide this fall after riding Harleys for almost 20 years. I plan on getting the XB12S in a few weeks and I had a few questions. I read alot about Drummers/D&D/Jardine pipes. I want it to sound almost obnoxious but also want the tq down low. What is an overall good pipe for that as well as durability? K&N seems the way to go for intake...Sounds like I'll be swapping tires out shortly for some better performers also. It sounds like Dave at Appletons HD has the line on Buell parts so I'll probably use him. Eventually will go with the race ECM I think. I'm not after high end, I'm after low to mid-range where I will really use it. Your collective opinions will be greatly appreciated....Thanx...

Yank the snorkel
Go K&N
Get a Drummer. It's only slightly better than stock on a 12, but doesn't lose anywhere and sounds VERY cool. I think the D&D has a little more on the top and a little less on the bottom and is louder. Take your pic.
Get a pair Of Metzeler Sportec M1's or Pirelli Diablo's ASAP.
Set the suspension for your weight if the dealership doesn't (check it anyway) and for the record I like one extra preload on the back.

Thank you for your service : ). A chopper pilot eh? I'll bet that's a good time. Which chopper?

M1, thanks alot. Sometimes when you're in some ****hole in the middle of nowhere you tend to feel like the whole country forgot about ya and what you do as a soldier. I fly the UH-60 Blackhawk. From what I've extracted from numerous posts you can't per se "buy" a Drummer but instead have to send your pipe in to be modified? Is this true. If so, can I buy a used 9 or 12 pipe (if they are interchangeable) and send it in to be mod'ed while I ride my stocker? Who and where does your pipe go to and what is their turnaround time (ballpark)?

You can sometimes find used pipes on Ebay for about 50-100 depending on how bad people want one at that point. As far as the downtime for getting a Drummer it certainly exists and I don't know how long it is. They are interchangeable. If I went the route of buying a second pipe I would go for the 9 pipe and keep my 12 pipe stock because the 12 pipe and valve system is very effective. Hence the reason it's hard to beat.

Odie I have a Drummer on a XB12S and your gonna love it.D&D is certainly louder. The Drummer will and I will repeat will at the seat of your pants give ya a thrill over stock. If ya send out your pipe Kevin gets on them as fast as he gets them.So figure a week to week and a 1/2 turn around.Pretty speedy I think.

I went with the Buell race kit. I think I should hit the dealer up for my stock pipes. Where do I get my 9 pipe modified?? Will a Drummer get along with the "race" mods that a dealer makes?

The race kit that I am talking about is the factory kit ($650?). Will the Drummer improve over the expensive factory pipes? Will I need to change anything else if I add the modified pipe?

Right before you retire, fly one of those big helicopters up to Appleton WI and can load up a new XB for you!

"I think the D&D has a little more on the top and a little less on the bottom and is louder."

THe Drummer is better on the top end and the D&D is better in mid-range. I'll post the dyno charts for the 1000th time or you can go to "From Cruiser to Sport Bike - An XB9S Rider's Log by Keith Thrash..." in the "Tale Section" of the BadWeB and seem them for yourself.

I have a D&D a like it.

As crazy as this may sound,in the beginning I wasn't gonna pipe it,I figured it was fast enough and then I started to miss the sound.Well Bubba hit me up to be the guinea pig for the Drummer.I didn't do it I think it was Gearloose that was the guinea pig.Anyways my thoughts were I payed a good lumps sum for the bike and I didn't want to throw a pipe on it and harm any of the bike performance anywhere across the rpm's.So after Dyno tests seen with the Drummer D&D and Jardine, the Drummer was the only one that didn't lose somewhere on the graph. On top of it all the Drummer had the smoothest curve of them all.Check them out at www.kdfab.com

So I can find a used 9 pipe and get it mod'ed and keep my 12 pipe stock due to the exhaust valve. No one has mentioned Jardine or Nallin Racing so I assume the D&D or Drummer is the way to go. Misato has the Nallin and I listened to his sound clip and it sounds like my wifes Sporty but a little more ragged. Sounds good but I want a slightly smoother sound if possible. I'm used to drag pipes and 2 into 2's on Harleys so I'm not familiar with what a 2 into 1 will do for a 1200 sound-wise. Dave, unfortunately I have already retired but I am continuing to fly as a maintainence officer for one of the contractors down here but I think that's a little too far..... I think I will give you enough business thru the mail though! Down here in Dixie Buells are far and few between...

We had a pilot that brought a Fatboy in Japan, hide it in the back of a CH46E. The CH46E was shipped back to base via a C5. He almost pulled this off, till he fired up the bike and drove it out the back of the 46 with the base CO right there.

Odie,

Go to my site to hear a sound clip of the jardine on my 9R. The pipe is well built and sounds great. Not nearly as loud as the d&d or latus.

That sounds very sweet! How does it do ya for power. I know there are lots of dyno charts floating around and it seems sometimes different items work in different ways for different people. It would come down to the mods they have working together or not. Race ECM and K&N are for sure close future mods just a matter of the right pipe. Does anyone have a good picture of the three pipes in question??? It does sound nice and like I said, I'm looking for power/tq down low to mid and something that sounds smooth and good and AMERICAN!!!!

I think the only repackable ones are the jardine and wilyco. Of course, you may never need to repack the others. The other thing you might consider is which one you can use a jack under, unless you use wheel stands. My bet is that the jardine is the lightest of the bunch.

If it's all "hard" inside like the Flowmaster on my Silverado then great. I do like the sound of the Jardine. Haven't heard any of the others though. I'm a welder/fabricator so I already planned on fab'n something for the necessary jacking although I do have a motorcycle lift but without making a subplatform to clear muffler etc. this could be a pain.....

the jardine only weighs six lbs. Mine is loud as hell, you can feel the gain on top. You can also feel the dip down low at 2k rpm. Pulls hard from 3k though. I am anxious to see how the race ecm will improve the dip.

The jardine sounds loud until you hear the d&d or latus. I imagine that force pipe would just be unbearable for me.

I couldn't stand to ride my bike over 3500rpm with the latus.

forgot to add: Jardine now supplies new aluminum fairing brackets. They are great quality and seem to be holding up fine. If you buy one that has the old brackets they will send you the new ones. The left side bolts on under the kickstand, and the right side bolts on the the belt idler pully bolts.

Dana, thanks tons for that sound clip. The Drummer sounds exactly like I want it to! I think most of my questions have been answered. I think the only thing that bugs me now are those hideous gold/amber wheels. They are butt ugly!!!!

So get a 9S and save yourself some bucks. I have a Drummer which gets compliments every day, and recently put the k&n and race ecm.

I have not ridden a 12 but my 9R runs plenty hard, and the higher rpm makes for more fun than my M2 (did).

odie
turn around time to you in AL would probably be 4 days. 2 days to us and 2 days back to you.
yes a 9 pipe will work.
the drummer loses about 8lbs from stock and retains the jack plates.
Its a perfect fit because it is made from the stock muffler.
on the 12 it is the only slip on out there to keep the smooth power band.

email me at

buckinfubba@hotmail.com

if you are interested.
it is made by my partner kevin in hickory , NC.

thanks dana for sending the sound clip to him.
