Sigh, this one is driving me nuts. Ok, 2005 XB9SX with Race ECM, K&N, and Drummer exhaust. This problem seems to happen only when it wants to.

When my bike is cold it will fire right up and run no problems. I can shut it off and restart it with no issue and ride it all day. Now, if I get the bike hot to where the cooling fan will run after being shut off and letting it sit for ~7+ minutes under 20 minutes and I restart the bike then it happens. This problem is the bike will idle low >1000 rpms and will bog down all the way to dead. I can start it, but it will bog down to dead again. Now, if I restart it and give it throttle it will run and I can ride it, once I'm at a stop it will still idle low but won't die.

I have ECM spy, but I'm never home when this happens. Most I can get it to do is idle low (around 700-800 rpms) with ECM Spy on the bike I can see nothing wrong. All readings appear normal. I have noticed that on the restart the bike runs in Open Loop and once it goes to closed loop it will idle at the 1050-1150 rpm range that I set.

Now, I battled an intake leak some months back on this bike. Far as I can tell from my last testing this leak is fixed. I might consider testing that again just to be sure, but since the idle corrects itself once closed loop happens I doubt this is the problem as when I did have the intake leak it was at idle that it caused issued. (idle would drop once the O2 kicked in)

I think it could be the head temp sensor, but it's not showing any problems right now or out of wack readings.

Anyone had this problem before, ideas?

fuel pressure possibly a pump issue vacum would raise the idle most probably if it doesn't surge or anything else I'd look at fuel pressure but first I woould make sure the intakes are clean no snot in em

Cleaned the intake a few months back as I had the bike apart for some other work. I also checked the fuel pressure. Well within spec.

Sent an e-mail to an unnamed source about this issue. Something they mentioned makes me lean towards the fuel pump. What was mentioned is that there was a issue on the fuel pumps where they would get an internal leak when the bike was shut off. It would lose pressure in the line and this would cause the fuel in the line to vaporize causing vapor lock issues leading to crappy idle until it cleared. This seems to make a lot of sense to me as this issue seems to follow that tread. It happens on a hot engine left to sit for a long/short enough time to make the conditions right. Sits to long and the fuel turns back after it cools down.

Now, I have found that if the bike sits overnight that when it starts cold the pump primes, but it sounds like it's priming with a low fuel tank (louder). I fire the bike up and it will start, but then die almost immediately. Flip the kill switch and let pump prime again and it fires right up and runs normally. Losing prime from the internal leak in the pump would fit that I think. Ideas?

change the rear cylinder head temp sensor to eliminate that...this same thing happened to my xb9 many years ago....no codes good pressure just acted stupid...

Anyone by chance have the fuel pump part number on hand? Along with any o-rings or other items that may need to go with it?

03 fuel pump in the book is listed as about 24 parts and pieces. Don't see a top-level "Fuel Pump" single unit part number. Can't believe you would have to order it piece by piece.
