Today the speed sensor stop working and came back alive twice. It seems like something is lose, I don't really know. I have read different posts about cleaning it, checking the connector, etc. The first question is, how common is this behavior of the speed sensors? And what is the best plan to solve it?
The second question is about compatibility. Is the 74431-01B better or replaces the original 74431-01?
As far as I know, the 01B is for 2004-2006, but it looks the same to me.
Last thing, is there anyone who has a spare sensor that would like to sell? Please, PM me.

The sensor on the 03's suck and would fail. Like you read, sometimes they can be cleaned, but sometimes they need replacement. The -01B supersedes the original, and is the trouble free unit used on the 04+ bikes.

Honestly, just replace it. Your dealer will have one....or better yet, order from American Sport Bike:

You can clean it, and it might work....but it will fail soon. Sensor is like $60.

Extremely ironic, my sensor crapped out on my 03 at 2003 miles. I am not even joking.

I ordered the speed sensor but I've noticed a consistent odd behavior in my bike and I don't know if that is normal or not.

The speed sensor works OK when I turn on the bike in neutral, after switching the key to the ON position and after the needles of the speedo and tach have flipped back and forth.

Now, the speed indicator doesn't work when I turn on the bike after I've forgotten the side stand and have 1st gear on and just press the clutch lever and turn it on.

My question is: does the speed sensor has to "initialize" the instruments with the needles flipping back and forth to make the sensor work? Are all the XB's like that or is just a odd behavior of my bike? Is something wrong with the instruments panel?

Sorry for the long post but any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like a fatigued wire or a bad connection perhaps.

The speed sensor is a magnetic hall-effect switch that "feels" pulses from a turning shaft in your tranny.
If it gets covered in little metal shavings, it won't be able to sense the movement of the shaft as well.
That's why it sometimes just needs to get cleaned off and reinstalled.
I would suggest following that sensor's wire and make sure nothing bad has happened to it.

Mine was acting in a similar fashion a couple of months back. It ended up being a lose wire where it connects to the ECM. Might be worth taking a peek.

Over and over.
I really should fix mine, rather than hoping it'll work when I need it ; )
