Hey guys...

Next Friday the 18th, I have to garage my bike until mid November...I am going to Utah for 21 weeks. Anyhow, anything special needed to leave the bike that long without riding it? I can have someone start it in the garage periodically.

Thanks in advance

Here's a good article: http://www.cycleconnections.com/articleprinter.asp?ID=100&TypeID=23

I skip the fuel stabilizer step. I also leave the battery in the bike and use a Battery Tender Junior to keep it charged. Since we have separate primary/trans in our XB's this should also be changed. Most important, don't start the bike during long-term storage (the article explains this real well).

Mike.

Jason,
If you are leaving to pick up mine and Bubba's Yacht, just drop your bike off at my shop with a new rear tire and I'll keep it running periodically!!!! KEVIN

Definitely avoid any fuel stabilizer...that stuff is crap IMHO.: D

I leave my lawnmower, weedwacker, etc with gas sitting in em all winter long..sometimes its 6-7 months before they will get used again & they always start right up.

The one & only time I ever used that stuff I had major problems come spring time.

Yeah, but mine did the same WITHOUT Sta-Bil! Like Dyna said, that stuff is crap! It just isn't necessary, so save your money and fill up the tank with fresh gas when you store it.

I've had bad luck with Sta-Bil in the past (not with bikes, but other engines like outboard motors and snowmobiles). Recently I've been using SeaFoam and have had much better results. Even with no stabilizer I've never seen gas turn to varnish in 6mos but things usually run like crap with old gas at first, even if they do start right up.

I have heard good things about the sea foam.

The stabil actually crystalized in the carbs on my Virago. The float needles were basically welded closed by that crap. Had to pull both carbs & flush out that stuff. It actually looked a lot like dried loctite.

Jason,
Keep it in my garage here in Draper, Utah, then we can both ride it!
Good luck on you trip.

I recently saw a sign over every gas powered product in a major lawn and garden chain store that stated StaBil is not compatible with reformulated gasoline and that it is recommended to drain the system of gas for storage.

I use StaBil and have had no problems. However, my Dad the Engineer (LOL), always shut off the fuel valve and drained the engines but kept the tanks full on all of his power equipment. In the later years, he added the use of StaBil to this practice and honestly there was no difference.

I don't know what the answer is, but consider that when my Dad passed, I sold a 50 year old Evinrude outboard motor that still started in less than 5 pulls. Additionally, it had plenty of use during those 50 years and never had any work done on it except plugs. Same applied to all of his lawn and garden equipment as well.

Just wondering about the use of StaBil with the reformulated gas. Never saw those warnings before and we have so many formulations of gas in this country, I wonder which one's apply and which don't.

Incidentally, I mentioned I use it but I also drain the system like my Dad taught me. Don't care for any rust in the tanks and my stuff fires up right away each spring (fall for the snow blowers) on the first try.

Modern gasolines are better than what came out of the pumps 30 years ago. They include oxidation inhibitors that are supposed to prevent oxidation (which leads to gummy deposits, or varnish) for quite a long time.

quote:

Chevron gasoline can be stored for a year without deterioration when the storage conditions are good -- a tightly closed container and moderate temperatures.

I'm positive this applies to other gasoline brands as well. More information can be found here: Longer-Term Storage of Gasoline

The facts and information are out there on the internet (if you are able to separate good from bad information). Why take my, or anyone's, word for it? Do the research and back up what you post with the facts! Testimonials are worthless.

Everything, especially gasoline formulations, must be considered by region. What you get at a Chevron gas pump in Auburn California may not be the same thing you get at a Chevron gas pump in LaCrosse Wisconsin.

Food for thought, don't drink the gas.

Mikej has a good point. The only thing I know it if I leave gas around here in anything the gas smells like sh** when I go to start it in the spring. I don't want to run that foul stuff through my injectors. There is another stuff I have used on the German cars I have worked on. It's called Fuel Safe. Never had a prob. But I have replaced my fair share of fuel systems and componentes due to gumming and varnish. I say we just never stop rid'n em! LOL.

Jasonxb12s,
I live in Iowa where it gets REALLY cold. I've owned two Buells, an M2 and an XB12R.
Here's how to prepare your bike...
1) Fill it up with gas
2) Check the oil level
3) Throw a cover or sheet over it and leave

I've never used any kind of fuel stuff and never taken a battery out of a bike or used a battery tender and both bikes have fired up anytime I needed to go for a ride, sometimes it was just above freezing. Remember the newer bikes and related equipment are much better than what we used and rode even 10 years ago.
Follow the above steps and it will be ready to go when you get back!

16 posts wow...I'm feelin the love. I do wish I could have the bike out there. I might look into the cost of it meeting me there. Nevertheless, I won't have a garage at the property I'll be leasing for my business trip. I do know that the bike will be sorely missed. Guess I can always read about how much fun you guys are having when I log in.
