My friend is picking up an 04 XB12 with just 5700 miles on it. I'm running Mobil 1 15/50 synthetic in my 99 M2 - switched it over at about 6000 miles. What's the consensus on synthetic oil vs. dino oil in the XB motor. Would like to make a good recommendation to my friend one way or the other. Thanks. |

there isnt a concensus! but enough XB'ers use synth that it can be recommended, especially in hot weather. i used mobil1 15/50 and found the consumption was much more than 20/50. i think for alot of guys its a $$ issue. |

At nearly 17K hard miles, I haven't had to add oil between changes...I use Mobil 1 V-twin 20-50 oil. |

I use Redline 20/50 and get virtually no oil consumption. I run 5K oil change intervals for the engine and tranny. I use the Redline lightweight shockproof gear oil in the tranny and it shifts very nice. A noticeable improvement over the 20/50 synthetic I used previously. I highly recommend Redline products. They are more expensive but I do not like to go cheap on the girl. |

The tests do show that AMSOIL that has been run in an engine for 5,000 miles still performs better than most/all other oils that are fresh out the bottle. |

O.K. I'll jump into this mix master! I use AMSOIL in my racebike and 1125R. I've have independant oil analysis done on the racebike oil after each season and they always come back the same. I put on around 400 mile of track only use so the chances of sheer are high but the results have come back looking as good as new oil. I now only change the racebike oil at the beginning of the season and just check the level throughout the summer. No need to change it, in fact after the analysis I found it wastefull to change it before winter so it stays in until spring. The engine is apart right now for freshening and my engine guy has been very impressed as to how everything looks knowing that I beat this thing without mercy almost from the turn of the key. AMSOIL is the real deal, you won't be disappointed. |
