All, I know we've discussed windscreen options before but I need some fairly specific advice/information. Looking to add a Palmer screen to my XB12Ss. I'm 6'2" with a fairly tall sitting height, bike will generally be used on short trips but I do jump on the freeway a lot (SoCal, so 85mph to avoid being run down from behind...). I did a 400 mile day in August with the stock flyscreen, which wasn't bad, but a bit more protection would have helped. I'd also like to have something a little taller for the occasional track day - be able to lay down and tuck behind. So my questions... Palmer screen vs. a stock Uly screen or other alternative? (to be clear, I'm going with the Palmer system, so this refers to the screen to be used on the brackets - not a question about alternative systems) If a Palmer screen, which size? Thinking of using a ZG Sport Touring screen as the base instead of a stock flyscreen (see below) - any problems with adding the Palmer Lightning bracket (or would I need their Universal bracket?) My thought on the ZG is that I could pop off the Palmer brackets for a track day as it might be a better choice for the track... unless someone has used their Palmer at higher speeds? I only get there once or twice a year if that makes any difference. My stock screen started cracking... badly. Coming from the holes so I'm assuming I somehow overtightened... the cracks starting showing up when the weather cooled down. I'm assuming it would NOT be a good idea to put the Palmer bracket on my cracked screen... hate to see the extra stress of more wind resistance cause a failure while riding. However, could I put the stock flyscreen on the Palmer bracket? Thanks in advance! | ||

I love my Cee Baileys, I do long rides due to my job and have not put the stock one back on since I changed it out. It does not look the same but let me tell you I turn the heads. I know Froggy had the Palmer brackets on his bike, not sure if anyone else here has them. I don't know a thing about his verticleness though. I'm 5'10" and found the addition of the Laminar Lip windscreen to my stock screen a useful addition for keeping the cold wind off of me. I thought very seriously about the Palmer brackets and still would like to get them, but a used Laminar was a lot easier for me to purchase. Gonna get their hand guard extensions before too long though. | ||

I'm doing a Uly windscreen conversion along with the ZG touring screen...I love my Lightning....but the wind blast is just too annoying and distracting at high speed. | ||

Maybe that's something to look at in tandem with the ZG screen. Straw - I'm kicking myself... when I first picked up the XB I bought a Cee Bailey like yours for $50 on eBay thinking it would be nice to have a taller screen handy. I never got around to using it and had a second bike (GS) at the time for longer trips so I sold it. Doh. I never even had a chance to test it so no idea how/if it would have worked for me. Fast - I'm with you. It's not bad, but it's bothersome especially for longer trips. I can tuck down on the freeway but that's not always the best option - puts me out of position to use the mirrors well and hey - at 46 with a 76 year-old back, leaning over for two hours isn't a picnic either. Quick update - I'm going to go with the ZG Sport Touring screen in place of the stock flyscreen. This is more driven by the fact that the stock flyscreen is on at least a 1 month back-order and who knows if it might take longer. I can get the ZG screen quickly. However, that will give me a chance to run the ZG screen by itself and see how well it works. | ||

I bought and installed the ZG sport touring screen...it made no appreciable difference at all...if anything it moved more of the air towards the helmet area...but I am a vertically challenged person  I took it off, wrapped it up and boxed it along with all the various other farkles I bought that will go with the bike if I ever sell it. | ||

Maybe should have ordered their short screen instead but figured if I have to order one, might as well trying a different size. If it doesn't work I'll probably use the ZG to mount a Palmer bracket/screen and quit screwing around. At least that way I'll have a pristine Buell flyscreen if I ever want to go back to stock/sell. | ||

All, first ride report on the ZG. As I mentioned above, I needed a screen and could get a ZG faster than stock. I ordered the Sport Touring version figuring I might as well try something different to see if it would help. As Fast mentions above, it does push the air higher towards the helmet. However, I actually like the ride better with this screen than the stock height. With the stock screen, the air hit me squarely in the chest, which put a lot of rearward pressure on me at speed. This screen puts more air at the helmet, but it's a very smooth flow and relieves a lot of pressure at higher speeds. And, it's a short tuck to get out of the wind. All in all, I think it will work great for me. I suppose a Madstad or Palmer would be even better for longer trips, but I'm satisfied for my local riding/commuting. I might later try a Laminar Lip like Littlebuggles suggested to see if it would get the wind above my helmet. |
