Just passed 15K on the XB. Idler Pulley and belt replacement recommended. Anyone else have any experience?

Thanks

Experience...I got no experience with it, just hearsay...

I've seen tales on this board of stock belts with 33,000 miles on them. I recall one guy replaced the bearing on the idler pulley instead of the whole assembly (I believe he had a press that would remove the bearing).

I'm at 13k, and will probably go "by the book" and replace both at 15k, and keep the old belt around for a spare, or to lift Dressers by if Court's legends have any truth to them. ; )

I've had 3 belts in 20000 miles.
The first broke by my own ham fisted handling.
Not sure why the second broke, maybe the 16000 miles on it.
At least buy the new one and have it on hand for when the old one goes out.
That's what sucks, is there is no warning for when it's about to go. It just goes.

A related note: Buell Service manager told me that belt failures due to the "inferior/defective" original Gates belt on the '03 XB's were happening consistently before the 4,000 mile mark, or so. If an original Gates belt made it past that, it would probably go more than 15,000.

I would recommend following Chainsaw's advice and get the belt and tensioner pulley replaced and keep the old belt as a spare (Important: don't twist the belts if you do the job yourself or make sure you tell techs not to twist them if you have the dealer do it!). Make sure you get the improved Gates belt (Part #G0500.2A8R).

Mike.

I had experience with this. I posted about it a month or so ago. Be careful with the new belt - BREAK IN PERIOD of 100 - 200 miles! I shredded my brand new belt in 60 miles. I too have had 3 belts GLitch. My 1st one lasted till the 15,000 service.. got the new one... shredded it... put the old one back on... got another 1000+ miles then shredded it too. I have about 3000 miles on the "new" belt. All is well. My advice other than the no bending / twisting is baby that thing for a few heat cycles.
