I purchased a bone stock 2007 xb12stt yesterday for $3500. This is my first Buell that is not a tubed framed model and so far im pretty impressed. I want to do a muffler for sure, its way to quiet. What mufflers are do people generally run on these? Im seeing alot of Jardine on the market. What else do people do to these machines to livin them up a bit? Id search this stuff but I just dunno where to start!

The Jardine is not really a good choice for the 12s. Everyone on here will most likely recommend the Drummer exhaust from KDFab.com.

Do people suggest gutting their current mufflers, or buying the drummer brand pipe?

Both, but the Drummer is tried and true. If you want to hack on yours there are a couple write ups on the DIY muffler mods somewhere around here.

buy a used muffler off ebay.

It wont matter if its for a 9 or a 12
Just let Kevin at KD Fab know what you are putting it on and you will be good to go.

Then you will have your stock pipe sitting in the garage if ya ever want to go back to stock and you want have any down time

Welcome to the site! There's another thread on gutted mufflers going on here. I have one on mine and it is very loud. If you don't want to be heard wherever you go and don't like to wear earplugs, don't do it unless you have a spare stocker.

You cant go wrong with the Drummer . Kevin at K Fab has put years of testing and racing into his modification . The only problem is its pricy , but , you get what you pay for , and he will give you a map to go with it . He is one of the nicest guys around .

If I have my pipe redone, do I have to upgrade my ECM? And if so, what are guys doing there? And Ive also heard about an airbox mod and a K&N filter. How vital are those upgrades? My 98 s1 has alot done to it, so its making my stt look bad : )

I think the 07 comes with a open airbox already but I would go with a K&N

No need to mess with the ECM in my opinion and Kevin will tell you the same.

Once you have changed the pipe go for a ride.
Keep it at 3000 RPM so the ECM can "learn"
Shut off (make sure you turn the key off) and repeat the 3000 RPM ride a few times, shutting the bike down every time.... you should be good to go

Erik Buell Racing has ecm's set up for the Drummer/K&N combo if you want a little more juice

Okay that sounds like a good place to start. Im used to a pretty loud pipe, so this pipe is quite a bit different for sure. How much does the Erik Buell Racing ecm usually cost a guy? And is the ECM pretty plug and go modification? Im used to carbs, heh.

I think the only thing you should need is a TPS reset

Is the best way to do the TPS reset by using the ECMspy program or is there a better route??

best route I have found is to have Froggy do it at Buelltoberfest.... if you can't get it done that way..

Then I'd go with ECM spy thingy after that...

The Erik Buell Racing website didn't say anything about needing a TPS reset so it could be plug and play for all I know.
But I would bet you will need to reset the TPS when you change the ECM

someone will chime in shortly that has bought a new ECM from Erik Buell Racing and we will know FO SHO!

wow good price on the bike you got!

besides the pipe and ECM i'd suggest doing a breather reroute on it, it makes the bike a little bit smoother at slow speeds, and basically just lets you use more fresh air. its really easy and only costs about 15 to do, you can get all the parts for it at autozone.

theres a thread someplace on the how to do it

and if you wanted to do the "white wire mod" (i think thats the color) it'll allow you to have both your headlights on at the same time VS. only one with the lightning style headlights. I havent done this mod b/c i have a bolt, but i've read about it a bunch

That breather mod is interesting. Ill have to look into that when i have her up on the bench. As far as the headlight mod to get both headlights would that make the high beam on all times? I got your PM though and Ill have to look into that.

correct me if I am wrong but the "white wire mod" was a common mod on the older generation XB9 where a white wire was removed from the ECM and related to fuel delivery and bypassing some EPA emissions stuff resulting in a small bump in low RPM performance.
the race ECM already bypassed this wire and it could also be programed out using ECM spy

the one Ian is talking about is commonly called the "dual headlight mod" or "headlight wire mod"

oh and the headlight mod keeps the low beam on at all times and only the high with the switch.

I think you're wrong : p

I have an '03, and such white wire. I believe it was a EU only emissions thing- not even applicable to US bikes.

The headlight mod is nice, but has some REAL drawbacks- namely that the headlight is no longer on the proper circuit (I think it becomes on the fuel pump circuit??), and does not cut out when starting and such. A better way to go about things would be to simply diode isolate the low and high beam wires and run them both to the low beam.

Taking the breather lines out of my airboxes drastically changed the low RPM behavior of both my 9 and 12.

from ECMspy.com, this is always what I heard and read about in reference to the white wire, I do know it was always related to the ECM

but it may be Europe only
I have also read where some say it is related to fuel and not timing but again

the headlight mod puts the low beam on another wire from the light assembly itself.
I think it is from the center marker light.

yea I read it on the internet so it must be true : D

I have never tested or verified any of this myself its just what I read, and I read a lot : p
commonly what I read is in contradiction with other things I have read so I really don't know for certain.
Just thought I would show my source, in my opinion xopti is reputable and knows a TON about our bikes, way more than I do, I am commonly referencing his tuning guide for info.
