So i saw on youtube a video a guy that cut open his stock exhaust and pretty much ripped it all out and welded it back together. I am in the military and going home to visit family next week in Daytona Beach and my father has an awesome garage for him to help me if i want to do it. Does anyone think this will hurt my engine? the mechanics here at work say that it might cause the valves to improperly seat with out the needed back pressure (they are just boat mechs)...gibberish to me i just ride bikes..lol ANY HELP? I just want a beefy sound and not really wanting to pay for a slip on unless i have to. Thanks | ||

I bought a modded muffler from a guy who said it was basically straight through, and it sounds like it. Super loud, you can definately tell what motor is in the bike. The butterfly valve looks like it's still there,just tack welded open. I noticed less torque, maybe more top end and about 4mpg less. It's been on for several thousand miles with no problems yet. It's definately loud, if you do long rides, you will have to wear earplugs and even then it might be to much. I may take mine off, it's that loud. I have heard the valve seat problem before, but mostly applied to trucks/cars with short, open headers. The cold air sucked in when the motor is shut off is supposed to make the seats/valves warp. There is probably someone on here with more technical knowledge than me who can give you a better idea. | ||

I rode with a guy once who had a gutted pipe.... last time I rode with him too :-) its too annoying for anyone else around. And Im a HUGE fan of Special Ops and Drummers, which have a bit more rumble then the stockers do. | ||

Leave the original muffler "original." Buy another off ebay and destroy it... That way when you decide what you have done is too loud. You can simply reinstall the stock can. Don't ask me how I know. | ||

if i was you google hawk performance exhaust he will gut yours perfect for 195 and give you the race maps tuned for your pipe. hes a great guy give him a call i guarantee you will talk to him for like an hour at least. | ||

Justin - More wives tales... You will NOT hurt the valves by screwing with the muffler...period. Since youre in the military....the P-51 fighter had/has exhaust tubes about 7" long..! And sure, they spent a lot of time at lower altitudes and taxing around runways. As for the muffler...many have modified them (including myself)... You can "modify" the guts to make it freer flowing...but DO NOT gut it. The engine likes some length to the header system. Mike | ||

I talked to the guy I got mine from, he said he sent it out somewhere(can't remember where) and it's basically 3" diameter straight through to the exit. I'm going to try and shoot some video of it running and riding and put it on youtube for you tomorrow | ||

WOW thanks for all the input. I wasn't expecting such a fast response. Its good to have buell friends, I am the only buell in prob a 150 mile radius in michigan..lol. Some have even asked if its a prototype,lol. But i will keep viewing the post and look for more tips. I might just buy a slip on, now i just need to know the differences between all of them. I see that D&D, Jardine and many others make a slip on for the xb9s. I just want a better sound jardine might just be the winner, seems more people have that brand? Youtube sound quality doesnt give me the warm fuzzy on any of them..Thanks again for all the help friends.Im in Daytona (hometown) for a week and am gonna ride the buell all over (its first time in the south) ill take pics. Nothin crazy its all stock... | ||

So you know, all the aftermarket exhaust ARE open, the two outfits mentioned here are nothing more and hollow stock mufflers with exhaust packing materials to buff the noise and that's it. Jardine and the rest of replacements are straigh thru with nothing other than sound deading wrapped around the interior part of the shell. Only those muffler manufactured from auto type mufflers have baffles that route the gases thru. I'm not a muffler expert but I've open some of this mufflers and seeing firs hand, by the way, my bike has a Yoshimura muffler that belongs in a Hayabusa......... | ||

Here's some video of the loud exhaust. Riding by on the road I'm doing about 40mph in 2nd, I think. Not using very much throttle because it was slick out. That should give you an idea of what a stock muffler with nothing in it sounds like. Some of the noise is from it echoing off the storage building and stuff. I have modified several mufflers for BW members. If you simply gut a muffler you'll find it way too loud. I always use a series of carefully placed baffles to get the correct sound. |
