I heard from the dealer that they are supposed to supply parts for 7 years after the last day of production. The warranty on the XB is 2 years though. That's a lot of miles but I don't think you need to replace it unless it looks worn.

My 04 belt was supposed to be replaced at 25,000 miles. At 30,000 it was missing teeth. I dont want to tell you what to do but if your belt isnt one of the newer belt that dont have a service interval I recommend replacing it. I dont want to go into detail but trust me you dont want to be in the shape I'm in with my 04. My belt was very obviously loose to the point you could spin the idler pulley with finger because there was no tention. Maybe yours isnt to that point yet. I was to broke to replace mine and should have stopped riding it until I could when i noticed it was so loose.

They are legally obligated to supply parts for 7 years. But really, who is going to enforce that?

My question is what parts are they going to supply for 7 years? Oil filters, light bulbs, tires, etc. The common parts that move in volume. Look out for the "obsolete" list of parts to grow exponentially from here on, as the suppliers quit making parts due to low volume.

My belt failed on my '06 after 36,500 miles. It still looked pretty good, but if you looked really close there were many small cracks visible on the outside surface of the belt. I'm not sure how normal that really is though. It was to a point where the idler pulley could be spun very easily with your finger tips.

The replacement belt has a different look though. I guess this new one was the final version of the "lifetime" belt. With luck it will get me to 75K miles!

Funny thing, when the belt broke it was during a very normal 1st to 2nd shift. It felt exactly like a lazy shift that found neutral instead of 2nd. Shifted again with the same result and knew I had just blown the belt. I was just surprised that I never felt 2nd gear engage at all.

Wow Sifo. My belt broke the same way. I just got a new one, and it is getting traded off. It is revision H. I'm going to a TT belt, so I gotta get a new one, and keep the one I got in trade for a spare. Thats a lot of miles on them belts there fellas. Mine went at 16-17k miles. Revision A.

I bought a spare belt some time ago from American Sport Bike. Last weekend, I installed new tires and at 16K+ miles I threw on the new belt. Old belt still looks pretty good, am keeping it as a spare.

I put 10k miles on my first belt (2004 XB12R) and replaced it "just because".

I put just under 40k miles on the second belt, and it still looked new.

YMMV.

Meh, replace it when it breaks. Mine broke at 22K, by the way. I think I need to smooth out my agressive shift from 1-2.

Mine looked perfect too. I was coming out of a slow left hander, going from 1st to 2nd gear. I still have the broken belt, and even looked at it the other day, and there is no obvious reason for the break. The only thing I can figure, is that I did an emergency stoppie in Waterford, and the stress from the suspension when fully extended for a few seconds may have weakened it. When the rear tire came back down the belt went slack, and then taught again. That may have done it too. Who knows. I dont run the lower belt guard either. Too many factors. Just get a new one just because, and keep the old one for a spare. YMMV.

...will harley not sell belts to riders...

You should always be able to get a 128 tooth Harley Sportster Belt. They fit the 2004 and later XB9R models.

I actually have an XB belt on my Sportster right now. It was $40 cheaper than the HD branded belt at the time.
