Do the heads really need to come off to get down to the lifters? Pretty sure I have a bad lifter or bent pushrod on the front cylinder so I either need to pull those lifters and fix them, or put in a full set of new lifters. I would do the new lifters if it was easy to get all of them out, but if I have to drop the entire motor out of the frame to remove the heads it's going to get expensive really fast with things that really should be done while it is all apart.

I think you can drop the lifters down through the cam box. the rocker box will need to come off to put the push rods in.

Does the cam cover come off with the engine attached to the frame? Rotating it down is not a big deal, but complete removal of the engine will be a little more than I want to get into. Thinking about an oil pump while I'm doing things so now I'm up to over $200 in parts.

Heads shouldn't have to come off. The rocker boxes have to come off to unload the valve spring pressure through the valve train. Taking the cam cover off before doing that can result in damage to the cam bearings, and you'll never get it back together without taking the rocker boxes off.

I was planning on rocker box removal... Thinking maybe just go with one of two stock lifters though I would really like to measure the bores and see if one is too large to maintain oil pressure in the lifter. I think it is just junk jammed in the lifter because it started after I removed the oil that had probably been in it for 6000 miles and put fresh in with good detergents knocking all the crap loose.

Looks like I'll be doing a front motor isolator too. If I have to drop the motor a rear isolator will also go in.
