I am not a huge fan of the dipstick I have in my 2003 XB9R. I can't bring myself to spend more than $50 for a different one, so I was thinking one of the newer XB ones instead. This is what mine looks like...except bent for some reason:   I noticed the later XB models have a top that appears to be easier to screw in and out, and look like this one:  Are the two dipsticks compatible (ie: threads into swingarm, oil level markings, etc.)??? When they changed the swingarms for 2006, the dipsticks changed too. They don't bend on their way down like the older ones. | ||

So when you say they changed the swingarms, does that mean that the threading is different? Do you think I could interchange a newer one in an older swingarm? | ||

I have never held a 06 and older dipstick. However I have seen them. The diameter looks different from the outside. They are not interchangeable Why is it you dont like it? It works when used properly | ||

I don't like how the older ones curl and bend for some reason, and the newer ones look easier to get in and out. The older style is hard to grip and turn. I just figured it would be a quick, easy, and cheap upgrade if it worked. | ||

If its hard to turn maybe its on too tight? I dont think there are any other options as far as the dipstick goes. On the plus side it looks like its easier to add the oil. | ||

This dipstick thread brought me back to one of my very first posts on Bad Web. It was in 2004, and it addressed the problem of reading the dipstick. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/63473.html?1096389948 I suggested wrapping it in yellow shrink tube.  Although some were skeptical, that dipstick is still going strong, in it's second bike, about 30,000 miles later, although I no longer own the bike, Lil' Blackie. | ||

Skeptical for what reason? Decent heatshrink should be completely immune to motor oil and the lighter color probably helps a lot and is something I should probably do now that I see it. | ||

The older dipsticks are a bitch to get out! It is the worse part about an oil change. I agree they stick |
