I have a 2007 XB12ss with 13,000 miles on it. I bought it last year at 4,000 miles. I put almost 300 miles a week on it commuting to work.

I've been a little disappointed with the reliability. Since owning it, the rocker box cracked and leaked and the fan broke. Ouch. The 10,000 mile services was pretty pricey too.

But the most annoying thing is that she only runs smoothly right after a TPS reset and that fix only lasts for a few weeks. I feel like I need to take it in for a reset at least monthly. If I don't, she starts to run pretty rough. Stalls at lights and gas mileage suffers.

Is this normal? Taking it to the HD dealership is a pain and expensive.

My guess is that it isn't the TPS, but the AFV that is the issue. Part of the normal TPS reset procedure is to reset the AFV to 100%. My guess is that due to some other issue, the AFV is getting skewed, and it runs great till it relearns an incorrect value.

Also, the rocker box leak is semi common, and when it leaks it will ruin the fan. The 10k service is expensive due to the fork oil change. Do yourself a favor, get yourself a service manual and perform as much of the service you can on your own. Skip the fork oil change since you use your bike mostly for commuting. : )

Great advice- The 10k svc could be done by a novice mechanic for about $75 in materials and a Saturday afternoon. A factory service manual is the best $60 a Buell owner will ever spend!

As far as the AFV- either get a cable and ECM Spy and contain the min and max parameters for your AFV, or find someone near you that is willing to help you do it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into the AFV issue.

At this point, is there a way for me to get my hands on ECM Spy?

Skip the fork oil change since you use your bike mostly for commuting

What other kinds of riding would make the fork oil change needed? My '07 is due for the 10k change and I am going to tackle it, but was curious.

Hard or aggressive riding (all the time). If you do a lot of track days.
I use mine for commuting, and skipped my fork oil change at 10k. I'll get it done this winter, and am rolling to 19k. I have had no decrease in performance.

Fork oil wears out from use, similar to tires. Ride hard and aggressive, you will wear out the oil and tires faster. I personally waited to 40k to change my fork oil, then the day before I was going to do it, I hit a car and ruined the forks. : )

As for ECMspy, the old version of it is floating around on the internet, the newer one is available from ecmspy.com, you need to register and possibly pay for it. The ECMspy cable is available from American Sport Bike and other online vendors.

Agreed - Fork oil changes IMHO aren't something I'm overly concerned about. To me, as long as there's fluid in it to make the hydraulic circuit function, then all is well.

45k miles on my '03 and never serviced the forks. Works for me. I lost a fork seal on my Uly around 32K miles & they were both serviced at that time under warranty. Problem solved. (Gotta keep the front planted or at least let it down a little more gently in the future.)

+1 on the manual and doing everything else that you can on your own. Those scheduled services at the dealer can really add up fast if you do any serious riding!

I have a VDSTS that I bought from American Sportbike before ECMSPY was available. If you cant get ECMSPY check with Am. Sportbike.

There was a thread a couple years back with locations of people who had VDSTS units that would do a reset for you/let you use it to do it yourself. I have one but I am in northern CA, so unless you are swinging up I-5.

I have over 30K miles and have never felt the need to do one. My only failure was the fan went out. Very reliable bike.
