All,

Have a chance to look at a local 07 STT with about 11K miles on the clock. Anything in particular to pay attention to with this particular model? Thanks!

It is the same as any other XB. Here are some things to look for when checking out a used one:

Bearings
Oil leaks (gaskets)
Rust
Aftermarket exhaust with stock ECM
Missing belt guards
Front end abuse - leaking forks, loose steering neck
Tire wear can indicate how it was ridden

Also, hard to check on someone elses bike, but the 07's have the bad "77" electrical connector under the front sprocket guard, which can lead to charging issues.

Pics? Link? We might be able to tell you more.

None of the above matters- for under $4000 just buy the things and ride it! Best Buell ever made right there.

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I was thinking. Good eye, Froggy. I'd missed that. If I end up pulling the trigger, you both have open invitations for a ride if you ever get out here. Remember that when that white stuff shows up in a few months... we'll still be riding every weekend!

I'll still be riding too, but on snowmobiles and snowboards!

I love MN- motorcycles and boats/wakeboards in the summer, snowmobiles and snowboards in the winter! : )

Andy,

I grew up in NoDak, about 15 miles from MN and 1 mile from the Great White North. My brother and family live over in Loretto, west of the Cities. I loved growing up there for the same reasons but have been out of the cold so long I'm not sure I could do it anymore!

Before Buell went TU, I purchased a used 07 STT with less than 2K for 5K. The bike looked brand new.

There was one here in CA for a long time - 07 holdover. Unfortunately, by the time I figured I'd call and see what they wanted - it sold. Not sure what it went for.

Well, I'm not so sure it's as good as it looked in the photos. Condition isn't bad, though the muffler is pretty rusty, there's some minor surface rust here and there, and generally looks like the bike lived outside for a while. Wheels look good though quite a few chips on the edge of the rim. No evidence of oil leaks. No way to prop up either end so kind of tough to tell if anything was wrong with the wheel bearings, steering head, etc. Frame, forks, swingarm all looked good - no evidence of ever being down. Small ding in header as Froggy noted. Headers weren't bad but again, looked like they'd lived outside for a while. Tires are not bad, front is new, but mismatched. Rear is a BT016, front is some kind of Metzeler (don't remember the model). Guy was honest enough to say that he changed the front and it's now leaking from the bead and needs to be reseated. I did look closely at both rims but didn't see any big dings or dents.

It's at a small shop with most bikes bought at auction. This was one of them. Repo from original owner and he's the second dealer to have it. I'm assuming the first dealer sent it to auction and that's where he picked it up. I called DMV with the VIN and they told me I'd have to pay for 4 title transfers (no one has retitled the vehicle since original owner) and pay $100+ in penalties since tags expired in May. The guy at the shop said there were NO penalties owed because the tags expired while in his inventory. Not sure what the rule is. He was pretty quick to say he would handle all the DMV paperwork - not sure that makes me feel better. He did however produce a copy of the title (says he keeps the titles in a safe), the copy seemed to be in order, though I'd have to contact DMV again and ask about what's required with a repo - obviously that owner didn't sign over the bike.

All in all, I didn't walk away with a great feeling, both from the DMV/title stuff as well as the general condition. Like I said, not bad, but not like it's been garaged either. And... no warranty at all, no test rides. I would feel better if I could take it to a dealer and have an inspection done before hand, not sure he'd go for it.

So... depending who you believe - it's $700+ according to DMV to register (including tax, title, license, penalties), needs a 10,000 mile service (not a big deal), would probably need at least one tire since they aren't really the same type and not sure how compatible they would be. On the good side, doesn't appear to be crashed, looks reasonably intact, fired up not problem cold, bone stock, new battery.

sure they did- the rider didn't own the bike in the first place, the bank did.

I'm open to the advice of you more experienced members.

Thank a lot guys

Levi,

I talked with DMV about the title - all seems to be good though they keep telling me there's $109 in penalties from the expired registration. John says it was in his inventory and there are no penalties. Either way, if he doesn't charge you for them it doesn't matter. He said he would change the front tire to match the rear - I think that would be a good thing since the rear is a BT016 and the front is some kind of Metzeler with more of a touring tread. He was willing to give a 72 hr time period to get the bike checked out - I would do that only because there's no maintenance history with the bike. I checked the HD website and there are no outstanding recalls - had SDHD check as well and they said the same.

It's a 3 week wait at SDHD to get into the Buell tech for an inspection; you might get a quicker look at Sweetwater in National City. John seems like a pretty straight guy and was willing to work with me on the inspection. I'm thinking if he knew something was wrong he wouldn't be so cooperative.

Thanks man I appreciate your time.

I'm from San Diego and can have someone look at the bike for me since I live in NorCal. He said to me that I'd have no problems from DMV and that it'd be registered. If he can do that, I'll buy the damn thing and get to work sprucing it up.
It'll be my first Buell, and I'm anxious to get on it and ride.

Of course I'll be right back here posting about it when it's delivered. I'm sure I'll have some questions, so I'm off to peruse the FAQ, and tech articles.

Thanks again to everyone who's helped me so far.

Cheers,

Levi

The leaking bead that needs reseated is a red flag! The only tires that have leaks at the bead area are nearly always caused by damage from mounting or dismounting the tire. Bead damage is a sure route to a catastrophic failure on a tubeless tire!

OK guys I'm buying it. I'll have paperwork to sign shortly.
Time to call Geico and the DMV.

Stay tuned for "OMG WTF!!1!1" posts later when I find a human finger in the airbox and a hole in the gas tank, but I'm sure that's all in the FAQ already.

That's hilarious Vosper. Mice shot out of my mustangs tail pipe once many moons ago after the car sat for three months. They all just hit the ground dazed and trying to run around blind. Apparently they were sleeping.
I'll be taking plenty of photos during my inspection, and "getting to know you" time with the bike.

I also owe you a big thanks for doing most of my foot work for me researching this bike. Thank you very much for posting what you found.

Sounds great man. I'm from SD and would love to come out for a palomar ride or something. I just need some of that... what do you call it? Ah I used to have a lot of it...OH YEAH!! ......

some time off.

I just never have any of that stuff.

For right now, I'm still finalizing the deal and the insurance for the bike. *Deep breath*

One thing at a time.

The paperwork's done and I overnighted the package to him.
Could have sent it two day but I didn't know he wouldn't be there today to receive the papers.
I'm just waiting now I guess. If everything's cool, I'm sure he'll just hit me up with a shipping date soon.

I'm using this time to assemble the bits of gear I didn't have and getting the various legalities like my motorcycle endorsement and some insurance.

Hurry up and wait just like in the Air Force.

Great bike, super fun in the fast stuff, tallish suspension gives good cornering clearance. Very smooth in the curvy mountain roads.

There was a kit for it that gave you passenger pegs/brackets and a two up seat. Or, if you wish to accommodate a passenger you can get pretty much any XB peg bracket and stock SS seats are up for sale fairly often. (I picked up a spare set of brackets by mistake, so I'll pass them on cheap if someone needs them).

I put a distribution block in under the seat, then wired up heated grips and a harness for my vest. The Buell heated grip switch gear is available from American Sport Bike if you want to keep it clean and add a bit of comfort for the cooler months.

Only problem I've had with mine was the fuse for my tail lights and exhaust valve burned out for some reason a while back, but it's been fine since I replaced it.

Thanks for the input buggles.

I will eventually rig the bike for two-up, but not in the near term. My wife was mighty disappointed to hear it was a solo seat.
Should get some drop pegs to try eeking out some more legroom too. My knees go past the ridge on the frame/tank on an XB.

Heated vest and grips sound awesome, and I'd love to do something like you've done.

Cold weather sucks and I'm about to do a lot of riding in it.

No problem. I need to snap pics of the wiring one of these days, but I followed the advice from canyon chasers dot net and the wiring info from A.S.B. and it got me through just fine.

Mine came with the 1" lower pegs on it, I believe they are standard.

Cool I'll wait on the pegs until I ride it for the first time.

canyonchasers is on my mandatory reading list, so I'll get to that soon.

John at Robinson Motorsports just sent me an email to let me know that I should have it next week sometime.

Is it possible too take my permit test at the AAA office? The DMV is pretty crippled by budget cuts so the schedule is reduced as is the manpower. This means you're going to wait a long time with a lot of people to get things done. My work schedule is already nuts, so I'm looking for the path of least resistance.

Suggestions?
