I am a first time, two week Buell owner
06 XB12X Uly 4,400k.
I changed the oil and the oil light stayed
on for about 15 Sec. I shut it off and then
started it again, still on, the third time it went out. but I have never seen that on
any of the bikes I have owned. I filled the
filter about half full of oil and put in
2 1/2 qt. of syn3. Is this a normal thing?
It always went out when cranking the engine
before and it does now.
Also it has a knocking noise, loud on the
right side when warm, I can hear it from
in the house when it is running.
sounds like a rod is ready to let loose.
I am in my 60's and don't know anything
about these things. I think I should have
bought a 250 as this thing scares the H***
out of me.
Also is the primary chain adjustment 3/8 hot? and what is the proper procedure to
adjust it.
I guess I was just used to my old 93 FXR
EVO I could not hardly hear it run.
Thanks

These are noisy buggers....hard to say what you're hearing. A loose primary chain makes a good racket. If left idling for too long with no airflow, my 12 would collapse a lifter and make a lot of noise - happened twice to me, so avoid that. The lifters are obviously hydraulic so no adjustments are needed. With the lower miles, I'd be inclined to think what you're hearing is normal. However, in the true essence of the internet, take that with a grain of salt. Maybe you can take a video?

To adjust chain, remove access window (two T27 screws) and measure vertical slack...max down to max up. That is your gap. I don't have the manual handy, but 3/8" sounds about right for hot. I personally always do cold, though. If you don't have the manual, I recommend it. Very inexpensive considering it is all the information you'll need to service the bike.

As far as the oil is concerned, the 2.5 quarts is the total oil WITH the filter. If you don't change the filter, use less oil. The dipsticks have been dubious at best, so don't put a lot of stock in them. Fill with the proper volume and reference that mark on the dipstick. Don't overfill...

Fill the filter full. Don't let it run while you are in the house. They have been known to walk off the kick stand if not on level ground.

Thanks for the info, I took some pictures.
The belt one shows a section of the belt
that looks frayed, the rest looks fine.
Is this a upcoming break?
My low seat looks to be rubbing on the black thing.
Is some thing missing on the bottom of the steering head bearing?
Thanks again
can't get the pic's to load

Buying the '06 Service Manual is money well spent.
Covers everything. One of the best I have seen.
Also, check out the Big bad and Dirty forum, specific to XB12X Uly's.
It has a great link at the top for info for new owners. Boiled down version of many things we have learned over the past 4 years.
