I removed the snorkel when I had the airbox off changing plugs.Seems to be a little louder, everything is stock, just curious if it is my imagination

I believe it is part of the EPA noise crap to reduce intake sound.

It's not the exhaust, it's the intake, and yes it is a bit louder without it.

You really want to hear intake and valvetrain noise, try a Force setup. LOL

There's a rubber tube that goes through the frame (snorkel goes here), it gets removed when you get a "Race Kit" or when you take it out yourself. It's mainly for EPA noise control. If your bike is stock, it'll be there. Take it out and your bike will breath better. You'll hear more intake noise (maybe not) but have better performance. Taking the snorkel out and getting the XB12 air box lid is the cheapest upgrade you can make to a stock XB9. Do it and you'll notice the difference straight away. Hope this helps.

I have the race kit, which is why I had no idea what it was. The 12 air box, does it fit right in without any adjustments? Roughly, how much does it run?

Also, will the k&n filter I have now (the one that came with the race kit) work in the 12 air box?

I think they cost about $35.
And Mookie is right, simple, yet so very effective.

The 9 and 12 boxes are the same as far as fit.
