Almost sounds like the neutral switch has failed. Does your neutral light come on in neutral? If the ECM thinks you are in gear it will keep the starter from engaging unless you pull in the clutch.

Have you taken the diode out by chance? Sounds like putting it in backwards can cause this.

sometimes you have to wiggle the shift lever a bit. just because it is actually in neutral does not always mean the switch is tripped. if the light isnt on the switch isnt tripped.

It sounds like one of your relays is bad. There are three in relay box. Try pulling two at a time and swapping their respective positions to see if your symptoms change. If so, then replace the bad one and you're good to go.

This happens consistently every time?

Kick stand is up?

If occasional, go with No Rice.

If every time, go with Greg.

Not likely relays because neutral light is before relay.

Not likely diode since it does start.

the strange thing is it only happened that one day. No problem with that since.
thanks guys.

I do have another issue (unrelated, I assume) the "click, click, click" (really fast) when I try to start it. I let off the start button then try it again and it starts fine.

9R rapid clicking? CEL flashing? Intermittent?

Check your headlight. It's probably not working when this happens.

Corroded ground wire (black) in headlight sub-assembly. Cut about 2" back and make a new connection bypassing connector.
