Xb's or 1125R's. Trying to figure out what a 49 state bike is and if out of state bikes are any different. I was not aware of any special smog equip on these bikes?

Yes both XB and 1125's have additional equipment for California regulations. The dead giveaway for a CA XB is the big black carbon canister hanging off the left side of the frame. 1125's have it under the seat. Different VIN's and ECM calibrations too.

Short answer is yes.

Longer answer is it depends on the model you're talking about for the changes. For the most part, the Cali bikes came with a carbon canister for evaporative emissions. 1125's in Cali also came with a small catalytic converter...the XB's did not.

Unsure if there are other differences...

FYI the canisters on the Firebolts are under the seat. Lightnings have them on the left side frame.

Thanks for the responses...really limits the searching for a bike in California unless it has 7500 on the odometer. I was hoping to find a workaround but it seems they can deny registration unless you can prove it is Ca compliant.

True enough.
I don't recommend this but, I knew a guy that bought a 49st Honda and had the odo rolled past the 7500 mile minimum.

Cost him to have odo patched, and the loss in resale value. But he had the customized bike that he wanted.

When de-smoging a CA bike, what do I do with the tank vapor line?

Vent to atmosphere. Usually the line is ran to the left driver or passenger footpeg.

Drop me a note if you are looking to sell your CA stuff, I want to add it to my bike.

I thought about that but it doesnt sound like a good idea to exit gas fumes right in front of my ehxaust outlet. removing but keeping my smog crap. i was just gonna leave the tube that goes over the inner airbox and end it right there. nothing really comes out of there right?

what about the interactive exhaust actuator? with the install of the drummer, the actuator is not doing anything. can it be removed in a way to not trigger the check engin light? and last but not least the air temp sensor in the air cleaner. gonna try a custome air cleaner under my outer airbox so i want to remove all this garbage.

Trust me, it is fine. : )

I've heard mixed things on this. I rather have it vent away from the airbox.

Usually yes, but on a hot day or an overfilled tank can cause gas to drip out the tube.

The bike will not run (or barley run) without the IAT sensor connected. You can relocate it but the stock wiring dosen't give you much slack.

Any more details on this custom setup?

we shall see. would love to do some sort of ram air intake with a up and forward turned snorkle. got ngk titanium plugs, went to gap them and the tip snapped off, gonna return and get the stock Harley plugs. got both old plugs out and they are both black, neither oily, but the front one is much more "sootie". neither a hint of brown.

got both new plugs in there last night. not easy. fired right up, sounded good.
being that i just fouled a set of plugs, im not going to do any experimenting but in about 200 miles i was gonna disconnect the air temp sensor for a while and see if i have any adverse effects. if not was thinkin about an S&S air cleaner.
please stop me if you have done this already or honestly know someone who has tried and failed. im determined to make a custom intake.

i read somewhere that there are diffrent levels of severity in regards to the check engine light and the problems which cause them, and that if it isnt a bad problem that with (x)# of starts the light will stop happining, something crazy like 1000 starts, anybode else ever heard of this?

Try it right now without the intake temp sensor. The bike most likely will not run, and if you do manage to get it to run, it sure as hell will run like crap. Been there done that, as I accidentally forgot to plug it back in once.

Just relocate it when you do your custom airbox.

There is no severity thing with the check engine light. You have two types of codes, current and historic. Current code means something is wrong right now, historic code means that something happened last time you rode (was a current code), but is no longer occurring. It is stored in memory for diagnostic purposes.

With a current code, the CEL will stay lit, but with a historic code the light will come on and go out after a few seconds each start. Starting the bike 50 times will clear the historic code.

Current codes can only be cleared by fixing the problem, hence they become a historic code.

when i got the plugs back in, i started it to hear the motor to make sure both cyl were firing before i put the lower part of the inner airbox back on, the part that has the sensor. it started, idled and rev'd just fine, i didn't take it down the road, but it seemed like it would have moved.

so what settings to the air/fuel/map does the air temp sensor change?

You seem to know a lot about Buells, and i appreciate your help, please don't get frustrated with me. just talking about things i've been thinking about. in all honesty i love my bike too much to do anything i think might hurt it. most likely gonna just settle with the K&N stock replacement filter.
