Doh! I wish I had not seen that. At least half the weight would be on the back tire of the bike, meaning well under 300 pounds would be in the trunk, which most cars oughta be able to handle if not already full of passengers.

Bolt a wheel chock into the trunk, with tie downs also bolted in, and that does not look like a half bad solution. Loading could be tricky though, unless you have two other "burleymen" standing around.

Just be real careful when backing, or making a tight turn, could spell disaster.

The only problem with this is that the oil for the transmission gets pumped and sprayed with the engine running. Towing like this starves the upper transmission bearings and gears.

Why would the engine be running?
Neutral?

The problem is with the engine not running. The transmission doesnt pump the lubricating oil the engine oil pump does.

I'm sorry, but I still don't see the problem in towing a bike, other than what I've said about turning and backing. If the bike's in neutral, what's the problem? Am I missing something?

Yeah the only thing I can see being a problem is the tyre wear being wasted.

Honestly given how easy it is to move my XB9R into and out of Neutral...I wouldn't trust the bike to stay in neutral over bumps and whatnot.

In any case, something is spinning in the transmission since the belt is now driving the transmission via the rear tire...yet no oil is being pumped.

Smitty,
Should be no problem on a bike like that.
The oil will be all in the rear of the gear case.
The will be a whole lot of splashing going on when the main and counter shaft spin.
I think that's a V65 Saber. The crankcase and gear box oil are the same.
Almost three quarts if memory serves (I used to have a V45 Magna)

Correct me if I'm wrong, engineers, but assuming the steering gear is not locked and assuming the fork is strapped firmly in the vertical position, wouldn't the rest of the bike lean to the OPPOSITE side in a turn? Captainplanet's setup looks like it rotates about the hitch, but the trunk thing doesn't appear to benefit from the same articulation.

Brad

Yeah I agree you ,with the bike tilted like that the crankcase oil will be in the normally elevated trans area and it might get enough lubracation. I see said the blind man.

Actually, I learned it as "I see, said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw."

But hey, in line with this thread--they got it backwards!

I saw that bike on the internet - it's awesome. They use it to tow cars. It can get through traffic to a stopped car a lot faster than a big truck can, and it can tow most normal-size vehicles. Great idea...
