Mostly Italian bike stuff, but the do carry Rizoma...hit Buell in the search and a few things show up. Neat stuff but pricey!

Trojan... How much for the rear XB pulley from Rizoma? I am hoping they make a front pulley of the same style...

I looked at that but... Uck... Too each their own of course, but that would add a lot to the unsprung mass. It's not only the weight that is important but the location of the weight relative to the front attachment point of the swingarm. I can't remember the proper term... polar moment of inertia?. Also, I would imagine that at high speed that thing would vibrate a bit which would be transfered DIRECTLY into the rear axle. Granted, with that big ol' gyro right there it's probably a moot point but every little bit helps.

Nope, it's attached to the swingarm.
I bet it weighs the same or close to the cheese grader, so with that gone, the weight would stay close to the same.
would vibrate a bit
Hadn't thought of that.
But this isn't something new, I've seen these on other bikes as well.
I think it would help for when my XB is being water cooled...

Glitch, being attached to the swingarm makes it unsprung weight. Unsprung is any weight not supported by the suspension.

Unsprung mass is everything on the "moving" side of the suspension system up to and including the moving parts of the damper AND spring. The farther the mass is from the fulcrum (in our case the pivot point of the swingarm) the more detrimental it becomes. Adding one pound out there is like adding two pounds near the axle. This is why I've never understood those little Buell "beauty cap" things you can get for your axles from most of the HD boutiques...

When it's all said and done though... I seriously doubt that I would actually be able to tell the difference in handling.

Here's an interesting thought... If you were to hang weight off of that, it would act as a lever with the axle as a fulcrum to counteract suspension movement. Picture hanging a 20lb weight off of it. It would attempt to rotate the swingarm and lift the rear of the bike. Now picture that same situation while hitting a bump in a turn. You get two problems... One would be when you hit a small bump (or any bump for that matter). The extra mass would require more force to make it move which would deform your tire patch a little more than normal (this is bad). ALSO... Once the bump is removed from under the tire (after you have crossed it) the momentum of this pretty little device would attempt to keep the unsprung mass traveling upwards relative to the bike. This is also bad. ALSO (OK there's three) when the tire comes back down the momentum of this extra mass would cause more tire deformation than w/o it AGAIN. Of course, all of this completely leaves the fact that it would be vibrating fairly badly in a bump situation out of the equation.

Oh OK, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I couldn't get passed the wheel assembly as unsprung.
Still like it though, I wonder if it weighs enough to effect the way I ride, on the roads I ride. I've seen them before on the StreetFighter websites, but I don't understand any other language, so that pretty much leaves me to just lookin' at the pictures. I've also seen them on BMWs around here, I think they were mostly plastic though. American is short on StreetFighter information. I guess that's why Buell beat US sales by 36% last year...
