From Roadracing World:

"...Forbes Magazine ranked the 2000 largest companies in the world, based on sales, profits, assets and market value...#585 Harley-Davidson, sales $4,624,000,000, profits $761,000,000..."

Yowza!! They are ahead of Yamaha and Kawasaki! If they REALLY scrimp and save, maybe they could one day field a small, modest factory Buell race team.

Don't forget... Buell is only 3%.

Now from your figures that would be
sales $138,7200,000

and
profits $22,830,000

They should treat us better!!!!

You know, I'm not one to doubt Forbes or Roadracing World, but as I went to sleep last night I thought about those figures. I thought maybe it was over a multi-year period, but reading further this morning, the article states "...Harley-Davidson continues to set financial records, including another record financial quarter in the first quarter of 2004. Harley-Davidson had $1.17 billion in revenue for the quarter..."

Maybe not such a small, modest factory team after all!! I'd love to see it, and I think it would generate tremendous interest.

You don't make profits by throwing away the income. Lesson...Aprilia.

Racing to promote a brand is not always throwing away profits. Lesson...Honda.

Dasxb9s--

Actually, they are not my figures, they belong to Forbes Magazine. Buell may very well represent 3% of HD's motorcycle sales income, but these figures are total sales income, e.g. parts, accessories, maybe also franchise and licensing fees, etc. I would imagine that these figures listed are actually Total Gross Income...

Race to win and use the tracks lessons in your product like honda does = good. Race to "promote brand" but none of your customers care because you don't sell sport bikes? Sounds like something HD would do, rather DID with the VR-1000.

Buell is a stand alone cost center within HD, I doubt they have the cash flow to go racing in a factory team mode. It's great that they give tech and moral support at the level they do, but I doubt HD will fund a Buell factory AMA FX effort thinking the rub-off will sell more Sportsters and Dyna Wides.
