I have a zena disc lock w/alarm. its ok. sometimes it goes off when I put the key into it to disarm it, but it never went off when cars trucks went by. its hi pitched, but its not as loud as a car alarm, running on a small battery and all. I never take it with me when out riding, too heavy and wont fit into a pocket very well. | ||

I have a Kryptonite u-lock. It came with a orange cord that you connect from the lock to the handlebars. I was thinking about an alarm so i would have to worry about the lock  | ||

Where were you going to place this alarm??? I have a Gorilla alarm and could find no place the unit would fit short of duct taping it to the fly screen! Until... I put the XB12 air box cover on my XB9S. The area made for the electronics for the muffler valve gave me space to mount the alarm. Next problem... The alarm is so buried that it is not very loud... muffled by the body work over the air box, but it has an alarm now!! | ||

Some one stuck the siren for the alarm inside the airscoop for the intake...tucked as far back as it would fit. If I see him again I will try and get a picture. | ||

Alarms are nice gadgets, but an old HD owner convinced me, by asking, do I really want to confront a group of professional bike thieves? Deadly Force does not apply to defense of property and it's the only thing that could even the odds in those confrontation situations. Use it and you end up "up the river" with the boys in the orange jumpsuits for the next 10 years or more. I use a good case hardened chain and locks and keep comprehensive insurance premiums paid up. | ||

Good point Curtyd but an alarm can help some when the thieves aren't all that professional, like when they want to push it away or ride it away, it's a lot better than nothing. It should not be difficult to immobilize either the coil, cam sensor (my favourite) or fuel pump and make it very hard to hotwire the bike on an XB. Just disconnecting one wire from the cam sensor will prevent ignition. I have fitted one of these http://stores.ebay.com/AutoTec-Automotive to a friend's Softail 6 months ago, he is very happy with it. Inside the electronics look good quality, I can't find anything cheap about this unit besides price, and it is genuine code-hopping with recognition between the alarm and the keyfob (I checked the IC and tested the unit). I was impressed with it and bought one myself for the XBS but haven't fitted it yet. They measure 4" x 2.5 x 1.25 excluding siren but it won't fit anywhere on the Lightning except maybe behind the flyscreen if the horn was remounted to make space, and I don't like running wires around the steering head unless I really have to. Wycked mentioned remote mounting of the siren, so I looked inside this unit just now and the siren can be removed. Thanks Wycked! So maybe maybe it will just fit under the seat, I know it will easily fit under the 12 airbox cover, and the siren behind the flyscreen or maybe under the seat in that triangle somewhere behind the fan area. It really is a PIA to get wires from under the seat to the flyscreen so I'm trying to avoid that at all costs. | ||

I don't think I really care about the siren. I'm more interested in immobilizing the bike. | ||

I was thinking more along the lines of an alarm thats disables the fuel pump or something like that. | ||

The one I was talking about in the post above has an in-built 15 amp relay that can disable what ever you want. |
