this is the second time this has happened to me:

going to work as usual. go to downshift for a stop sign. nothing there. WTF? look down and the socket screw is gone (again). first time this happened i thought someone was screwing with me. shifter itself and bolt still in place, just the socket screw that attaches to the shifter linkage is MIA.

a while after the first time it happened i thought it might be my fault. dropped the bike on the left from leaving the brake lock on (DOH!). but both times i was 100% sure i torqued down the screw as hard as possible. i know this is a part that has the potential for movement, but i didnt think id need loctite.

thinking about going over to a clevis pin/cotter pin instead, in the event that threads on the inside of the shifter are damaged.

any thoughts?

Lock-tite.

The screw is a grade 8 1/4 20 3/4" allen head. I'm considering going to a 7/16 and drilling a hole for a cotter pin.

Oh, and guess what bolt you lose if the bushings on the shifter wear out!

Clean the parts with brakleen....use GREEN locktite...you will need a torch to get them apart on purpose.

Mine fell out, and I replaced it and used loc-tite.
To fix the bushing in the shifter problem, mine rides on a sealed roller bearing.
The screw size is a 10-24 x 3/4 or 5/8.

This happened to me a couple of months ago as well. I safety wired mine like the above poster. I think it's just like a tuning fork out there vibrating away.
