Just got back from about a 150 klm ride. And oil is pissing out from the top of the pushrod cover. Im assuming that there would be some sort of oil o-ring up in there that has perished or pinched or something.... will i have to drop the motor to get to this?

No, you will probably have to remove the frame to get easier access to the rocker boxes and heads. If I'm not mistaken, the o-rings are part of the heads.

Yup, pull the frame for easy access, or rotate the motor to take a little more time.

Whats involved with "pulling the frame" im trying to save $90 an hour by doing it myself. Its an easy fix, its just getting to it is the hard part.

Do you have a service manual? It has the whole procedure listed in it.

FYI i found the cause of my oil leak, my breather hose(s) were blocked. One or both. After rerouting as not to poke through air box cover the leak pretty much dried up. I now have open air box cover and external air breather located under chin fairing.

Im_joedirt, give us an update on your leak....
I just did the reroute breather mod today on my 07 XB12 Scg CA, pulled the hose all the way to the back, but did not include an air filter and closed the end of the hose!
after a 5 min ride I opened it and then rode it hard, but now I have an oil leak from the top, but can't see the exact location... it's a mess, what do I do!!!
I also rode it quite hard yesterday, but did not notice any oil leak before the mod.

from the top of where? Pushrod tower? mine to i sleaking oil again after installing open airbox kit. I must have tightened up a hose to much and blocked it off.

Dont close end of hose, it needs to breathe. that will be your cause.I have an small filter on the end.Or you can attach to a catch can

Ok, I can see that the rear Rocker Box has a leak, maybe from the both top and bottom (which is just a couple inches apart in width) These are very close to the fan and that is why it became such a mess.

My fault =( I ran the engine with the reroute closed about 5 min... it could have been that, or the two previous generous rev rides.

Also, I was reading , and quote "The rocker cover gaskets are silicone rubber. I looked this up and can’t remember for sure but I believe they have a temperature rating of around 300 degrees F. When I removed mine, there were black areas on the gaskets where they had overheated. At the black spots, the seals had lost their elasticity, were brittle and had physically shrunk in size.
HD did not use a high temperature silicone compound in their gaskets. If they had, we wouldn’t be changing them out so often. " (MMcN49)

So this could had happen by my heavy handed ride last couple days. my bad.

well, I am really thinking about doing this repair my self, will be reading on how to access the rear cyl. by rotating the engine....... arrggg

I hate posting threads from other sites, but in the end, it is about information...

let me know if you have any other info.. I will post some pics soon of the leak...

I found a great thread with my exact case.... the pics looked just the same! is this your leak too? seems to be that many of us have faced this problem. some guys do the repair themselves.

I am definitely buying aftermarket gaskets. some invincible ones.

after reading all of this, I am thinking $400 bucks for a mech to do it here in LA in not to bad.... I just really want to learn.

Mine is actually coming from the Top of the pushrod tower that fits up into the front rocker box cover. I believe that there are some rubber o-rings up there that can get pinched? I had an engine rebuild about 700klm ago and the leak only started about 100klm ago. I would have thought that if an o-ring was to be pinched it would have been leaking from the start...
