my wife and i cant stand to ride with the d&d pipe anymore.the noise and eco is just too much, also its not as easy to ride or as fun as it was stock. but i do like the look alot,so before i put the stock pipe back on will a race pipe be better? i want it to be quiet enough to ride with out going deaf and to lose the h/d pop sound when i let off the throttle.

Put the stock pipe back on. It's quiet, the bike runs great with it, and you won't get any tickets with it.

I never could understand why someone would want all that noise for so little (if any) performance gain. Especially for riding on the street.

Then again, that's just me.

I am so confused. You may be the first to not like the sound of a D&D. Stock sounds like shit, you cant hear the motor at all when your riding on the highway. If you dont like D&D your not going to like anything but stock, unless you have a custom pipe made. I have a VooDoo its close to the D&D. You may want to buy a stock Harley sportster.

i like the d&d it looks perfect,it sounds great. its just a little too loud and has a drone eco that gets on my nerves after a hour of riding. i want something a bit louder and better looking than stock, but i never herd a race pipe before,i dont want to buy a pipe and it be the same sound. and want it to sound the farthest away from a sporster as i can.

The D&D and Jardine pipes are easily the two loudest pipes on the market. The race pipe is quieter. Look at getting an European street legal pipe, they are about the same volume as stock while sounding much better.

+1 Ulynut

If the wife wants to ride with you, make the bike quiet.

Stock is loud enough for me with a full face on. I don't wear ear plugs.

But,but, but wouldn't it be an easy resolve if you both just wore ear plugs?I mean goodness it's not like your wanting to carry on conversations anyway right? We are talking about wives here correct?Come on guys, where are we going with this?
Just kidding, but seriously I'd leave the bike alone and just block those ears.

Ear plug's only do so much. I have some that were molded to my ear made by a Ear doctor. They do soooo much. I had them made because I had a D&D few years ago. Because of that and its poor performance on the Dyno I went back to the Drummer.

What about putting the Jardine Quiet Core in the outlet (or two if dual outlet). That should bring the sound down a bit without damaging the look.

The race pipe is not as loud as the D&D. Unless you have an inside line to a race pipe, they are far and few between these days.
The Buell race pipe also has a hole in the mid range that will not enhance your two up riding experience.
IMHO the best balance between sound, performance and cash is the Drummer or Special OPS. Otherwise stock is the way to go.

The dip isn't there with a little tuning, and it's quieter than either the Drummer or the Odie.
But you're right about them being the best low to midrange pipe made.

i swaped back to my stock pipe, but it is not exactly stock, the last owner removed the baffles and valve , it sounds like a race pipe but it still does not have the looks. i listed my d&d in the classifieds to trade for a race pipe,if not ill sell it and buy a race pipe,i know im not going to get my $550. back ..hopefully most of it.

The impressions of the race pipe that I have heard (I have one on my XB9) are that it is louder to the rider than to the surrounding area. I still ride with ear plugs. I actually prefer the sound of the stock pipe, especially in the upper rev ranges the XB9 can reach. And, yes, the race pipe has a HUGE torque hole at about 3K-4K RPM.

I noticed that phenomenon some time back when I put the SuperTrapp tuneable slip-on muffler on my M2 Cyclone. I thought it sounded louder than hell, but when I pulled up to a friend's house, his first response was: "I thought you said you put a louder exhaust on there?"

This was backed up later in the year when my friend videoed me at California Superbike School. My Cyclone was quieter than most of the other bikes on the track, but it sounded so LOUD to me sitting on the bike. Weird.

Just to add to above. I have a voodoo also. I love it and would never go back to stock, however I cant ride without earplugs either.
My helmet seems to capture the soundwaves making it "drone". Borrowed an open face helmet and it was a lot quieter didn't need earplugs.

And, yes, the race pipe has a HUGE torque hole at about 3K-4K RPM.
This is an easy fix.
Not even an issue any longer.
The only pipe without a dip before tuning is the Drummer and Odie pipe.
I ride with Ann all the time and have no issues at all either.
All that's needed are:
Catch can: smooths out the 3000rpm bug.
Open air box: not completely open, a few holes is all.
ECMSpy: gets rid of all flat spot issues.

Glitch, do you have a map you could share? I've tried my hand at ECMSpy tuning, and only made the thing run like crap. I don't have a catch can (how would that change how the bike runs?) and my airbox is pretty well full of holes.

I second the earplugs wearing. Even previous bikes stock exhaust used to get to me (Ducati 1098, Suzuki GSXR. I plan on getting another custom fitted pair soon. Along with a good helmet it makes riding so much more pleasurable and I can still hear things, but takes the edge off.

Real men may not wear ear plugs but I still like the fact that I have some hearing left at 44...lol

Wind noise will cause permanent hearing loss at highway speeds, regardless of your helmet or exhaust choice. Ear plugs are a must regardless.

Possibly, well sure I do, although I'm not the ECMSpy guru, or even novice for that matter.
But, I'll see what I can do.
You can start where I did to begin with.
I loaded the '04 Race Map, and got very good results.
I'll see if I can find the tweaks.

+1000 on the ear plugs! Most importantly though, try as many brands as it takes. Although you may have NRR 32 dB, each will sound different to you. Make sure you wear them properly!

Case in point, I had a set of custom molded silicone ear plugs made when my XB9 was stock. Worked great, very comfortable. Installed a Drummer and the drone was terrible. Moved back to foamies, and all was well again. I just recently did the same with my Drummer-equipped XB12. The drone with the same foamies that worked on my XB9 was unbearable. Totally ruined the ride. I picked up a new brand of foamies and the difference is night and day!

Every helmet, bike, ear plug, and ear combination is different, so keep trying earplugs. You can often buy combo packs to sample each. Keep trying till you find something that works. Don't believe the hype? Try riding with one ear plug in for about an hour. The difference will be very apparent when you take that ear plug out after the ride. Hearing damage is cumulative and permanent, every little bit adds up. Unfortunately, you won't realize this until it's too late.

if shes wispering something dirty in my ear i want to hear that! i put on my hollowed out stock pipe and i cat belive the difference,it lost a bit of power(its not a whellie machine anymore) but all around it is just as fast.but it now is a complete joy to drive,i love it again, all of the strange noises went away,im relaxed and can concentrate.i will wear ear plugs on long highway rides.

HuH? your stock pipe hollowed out?

Just curious why you were running the D&D if your stock pipe was already modified?
