Primary chain tension adjustment? It's a 5 minute job.

Might be a fuel pump... I have a carb ; )

The primary chain connects the engine crank (dead center between the pistons) to the clutch / transmission. It is a triple wide chain that sits in the same oil bath shared with the transmission (which is separate from the engine oil).

There is a nylon shoe on a metal post that takes up slack and keeps this chain from rubbing the primary cover. It is all on the left side of the bike. You can adjust the tension with an allen wrench inside the adjuster shaft that sticks straight down from the cases (after loosening a nut on it).

There is an inspection cover right above your shifter shaft (the top one) that allows you to check tension. The owners manual / service manual should have detailed measurements.

Mine is noticeable when needing adjustment, as my shifting gets crappy, and I get a rattling when engine breaking as I recall.

I just bring it up because it is a possibility, and could be checked in 5 minutes with no new gaskets and very simple tools (just pull the inspection cover and check as per manual).

As a general rule though, if you let little noises on a Buell drive you nuts, they will. Every time mine was broken, the noises were never "subtle".

Most likely the fuel pump. Some are louder than others, sometimes the sound goes away over time, etc. They are noisy little bastards all on the XBs, though.

And you have a cooling fan I lack as well, so could be that as well... the sound I was talking about will also sound like a bunch of rocks in the primary case.

A whiney sound under the rear-left side of the frame of an XB is most likely the fuel pump. It's the same noise you hear when you turn on the bike, right before you start it, right.

Mike.
