As it is winter here in OZ my bike hasnt been ridden for about 6 weeks, as i gave it a wipe over this morning i noticed a puddle of oil underneath the front tyre... obviously fork oil but only from one side. Is it still rideable to a workshop? | ||

If the right hand seal is leaking, it can get on your brakes and they won't stop you. You will have to clean the rotor and replace the pads. | ||

And is this uncommon for a bike only done 17000klms It's not common, but not unheard of. Sometimes the seal just got folded under itself and can be manipulated back into the correct position with a small, flat, flexible piece of plastic or something. I saw a guy use a playing card to fix his by pushing it up between the seal and fork and kind of pushing it back and forth. You might want to give that a try first. If that doesn't work, change out both seals and you should be fine for a long time. | ||

And is this uncommon for a bike only done 17000klms That is 7000 past the recommended service interval. It will do you good to have fresh oil anyway. In my view it would be really cheaping out to change the oil, but not replace the seals, especially if they are starting to leak. Of course opinions will vary. Should be fine to ride, but as the oil gets low the damping will go away so don't ride it hard. | ||

I just changed my front seals, and the pieces I changed were: 2 seals, 2 slider bushings, and 2 guide bushings. The bushings are so cheap, you might as well replace them while you have things apart. The job was pretty easy, the shop manual walks you through with no problem. Check the KV for some good threads on the subject. I manufactured a factory type spring compressor, but a ratchet type strap setup would also work well. I also spent wayyyyyyy too much time fabricating a seal installation tool, but you could get resourceful with some PVC pipe and get good results as well. Good luck! btw, Aussie wine kicks ass! There are 2 dust seals, 2 oil seals, 2 slider bushings and 2 guide bushings. Also if you take the bolt out of the bottom of the fork to get the damper assembly out there are also 2 copper crush washers, but you don't really need to do this, just don't let the manual lead you into doing this step! I got mine all ready for pressing in the new seals and took them to my local sport bike shop. A few minutes and $10 later I was all set with the seals pressed in. Wish I could help with where to buy in Australia. I would check with American Sport Bike to see if they ship there, I bet they would. | ||

Joe Dirt - I make tach kits for DR650's and ship them Down Under all the time. If you have problems finding a place that will ship, I'll pick up the parts for you locally and send them myself First Class International. My tach kits weigh 1lbs and I think the cost is about $10-$12 shipping. I can't imagine Sifo's list of parts weighing much more. | ||
