I read that for the first oil change it is best to keep regular motor oil in the bike, and after that is is good to change to Synthetic. Anyone have their $.02? I am about to take care of the 1,000 mile service this weekend, so I am curious as the reasoning.

I've always ran synthetic in my '04, but can't remember if I started it at the 1,000 mark or at the second oil change (I'm sure there isn't that big of an issue either way).

Yup. We could beat to death another oil thread, but that sums it up nicely.

I questioned the techs at the local HD dealer and they both said it was fine to do. So I put in Syn at 1000 miles. I saw very little metal in the oil when I drained it. I did notice my mileage has gone up.

Good enough for me. I already have quarts of Mobil1 Vtwin. I'll roll that direction.

I put 15w-40 diesel in at ~ 80 and 500 and plan on putting Mobil1 vtwin 20w-50 in at 1000. With that said, I doubt it matters too much. Do what feels reasonable to you.

+1 on the 15-40 Swamp. I recently changed my oil (I do 2000mi. intervals) and went from the 15-40 diesel to Valvoline Vtwin. Very big difference in the way the motor sounds. Especially when it's up to temp. Not like anything wrong. Just a different tone. Maybe synthetic next time, just to see what it sounds like.
