I have been chasing down an increasingly loud rattle from the primary area of my 2006 XB12R.

After pulling the primary cover and removing the clutch assembly, I discovered the source of the noise: the springs in my clutch basket (AKA cush drive) have failed. Two of the springs have 1/4" of movement. The remaining 4 have 1/16 to 1/8" of movement.

Gary from Evolution Industries has been working with me to use a billet aluminum clutch basket for the earlier XBs on my bike. Once the clutch arrives, I'll be doing some measuring and possibly minor machine work to install.

I've done some reading on the XBRRs here at BW, and they have what appears to be the same clutch basket (looks identical to my clutch basket) I assume this was done to add some sort of cushioning to the drivetrain, since the rear sprocket (remember, XBRRs are chain drive) is bolted directly to the wheel.

Did the XBRRs suffer from the same failure? From what I gather, only the 2006 and up XBs use the cush drive clutch basket.

Since the regular XBs use a belt drive, I wonder why Buell felt is was necessary to add the cush drive setup to the drivetrain. I would think the belt drive would provide enough drivetrain cushioning for street use.

I'm mildly concerned that fitting the billet clutch basket/clutch (no cush drive) will cause transmission issues further down the road.

My bike is strictly used for street riding. I'm just looking for a reliable setup. I decided to go with the Evolution setup since the stock cush drive basket failed so drastically at such an early mileage.

Are there other 06 and up XBers out there with similar issues? I'd like to hear from you.

I have a 2003 XB9R, it has the cush drive clutch shell, it also has 65000 miles, no clutch issue's.
I believe all the XB's have the cush drive clutch shell. The 1125R and CR have a compensator built into the output pulley.
I have not heard of any XB cush drive failure's, not that it can't happen. The more typical issue is clutch slippage or not disengaging.
The list price for a new clutch shell is not exactly cheap, mid $300.00 price range.
You can shop around and find it for less than $300.00 new.
Also you may find a used one in the classifieds on this board. A few people have installed slipper clutches, maybe someone has a stocker they want to sell.
Ebay can be a decent source as well.

Those springs are not really for a cush drive, they are to help prevent clutch disk chattering and most clutches have something like it (at least car clutches).

Once the clutch is locked up those springs shouldn't be doing much work.

Side note: The rattle that you are hearing could be caused by a loose flywheel sprocket nut. Buell released a revised torque spec. Your bike being a 2006 should have had the higher torque implemented. Now since you have everything apart you will never know.

Rsh, thanks for the info.

I did check the front sprocket torque, all is good.

I just wish I knew how the springs got so hammered. Gary at Evolution was shocked at how whipped they were.
