Hey boys, over the last few weeks the faithful "9" has begun surging in a very strange way. It is not an RPM specific problem it will do it all across the RPM range. Here is the problem:

At any cruising speed if I just barely have the throttle cracked it will begin to surge and buck.

As i said before, it doesn't matter the RPM, gear, or speed as long as i am at a constant speed with the throttle just cracked it will begin to surge. The bike has not thrown a code yet so i'm in the dark on that end. I did do a TPS reset last night and after i did the reset i went out for about a 20 minute ride and the surge was not present at all. No matter what i did it would not surge. I went for a 4 hour ride this morning and all was great for the first hour or so. I stopped to grab a coffee and when i got back on the bike the surging had returned. The only thing that was strange was when I did the TPS last night I was not able to get the TPS degrees to zero out, the percentage was at 0, but the degrees were at .04 and would not go any lower.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

I vote CKP. Went through much the same thing. Replaced O2 sensor, plugs, wires, still did it.

TPS reset, still did it. I was told it was an intake leak. It wasn't. They replaced the coil, still did it.

Finally it was discovered that if they (the dealer) applied heat to the CKP or (crank position sensor) that it would send an erratic signal to the ECM, making the bike buck and surge and fart. Usually up around 5 grand anywhere between 40 and 75 miles an hour that I noticed.

The bike would act up and then be fine for a while. It eventually over time would happen more frequently.

Replacing the CKP fixed mine. Good luck, hope you get it figured out.

Shawn check the butterfly inside the throttle body.
Make sure there's no play.
Charlie's bike was doing the same thing.
No codes either, but, it wasn't zeroing out all the time when doing a reset.
Just being cracked open, makes me thing the butterfly is loose, causing the TPS to go wonky.

Or it could be the CKP ; )

i had this same problem took it to the stealership 4 times! finally me my father and brother figured it out. What had happened is i got the battery replaced and when they replaced it they moved the wires going into the ecm. When you put the seat on it would grab those wires. So when you sat on the seat it would pull the wires out of the ECM just enough to make it stutter and buck and run like crap. Only time it was good was at WFO and that was because it took your weight off the front of the seat....Moral of the story? Check everything...even the obvious.

Light it on fire, Shawn. Then you don't have to worry about selling it either. Win.

by "CKP" do you guys mean the "cam position sensor"? my 03 9r was surging, bucking, resonating, etc too....no codes, replaced coil, wires, plugs, O2 sensor, reset TPS, reinstalled stock ecm, etc etc.....eventually the ecm thru a functional error code that led us to thinking the Cam pos sensor was flaky. Replaced it about 5000 miles ago...running MUCH better since.
I ordered mine thru my dealer, (prior to the October announcement). It took some time to get it, there were none in Canadian stock, it had to be brought in from the US.
it was somewhere around Cdn$120.
Good luck!

my 12r just started doing the same thing. anything past barely cracked and she shakes and stumbles. it just started doing it. once you open her up, she is a screamer. occasionally, it would backfire through the intake. looks like she's parked until i can turn some wrenches on it. so much fun to ride, it hurts my feelings a little. oh well. while i'm at it, how do i reset the tps?
