For a little history. (03 xb9r with full race kit) Before having my tps resest with ecmspy my bike had no hesitation in any gear, no stutter just a little surging in like second gear. I also notice my top end accel was lacking more then normal. The bike was due for a TPS reset so I had one done. Unfortunaly its worse then before the reset. Had to try the reset twice yesterday with still no improvement over the first reset

Accelaration is great now in the topend but...... Surging is worse off throttle, kind of annoying. Worse then before the reset today. RPM spike up and down from like 1100-1500 while idleing.Bike never spiked before reset. then when turned off turned back on it idles around 1000 - 1200. oh and now popping in Decel

any help would be greatful

Which tuning guide are you following to do the reset?

Im not sure, Deltablue did the reset for me. I think he followed what ratbuell posted on the uly thread.
I used to go to the dealer for it.

I followed the current Tuning Guide on ECMSpy. I did a little searching in the KV and I'm wondering if there might not be a leak in the intake seal? That seems to be a cause for the jumping idle.

Would a fouled plug cause the surging issues and Idle Jumping?

did we set is at 5.9 degrees. and do you the an AFV reset might fix it

5.9 is high. Fouled plug would cause sputtering and possible backfire. Did you allow the engine to fully warm to 140 °C or 285 °F before setting the idle?

Yes, both time we warmed the engine. According to the ECM Spy guide 5.5-5.9 is the start point. I have the same issue on my '03 to keep it in range it is either low idle speed or high tps position.

5.2 - 5.6 degrees actually. If it was set high the idle will surge. Just try to tweak the idle down some.

If you did a tps reset on two bike and they are having the same problem, something isn't right with the reset process.

Yeah it says 950-1150 so turn it down a click or two. The reset was done twice on the same bike. I am riding mine today and she idles around 900-950.

so do I just turn back the idle two clicks or do we need to try a 3rd reset.

Up to you. If you want to do a reset and ride in the AM I'm good with that. You may want to back the idle down a click or two in the interim just to be safe.

Start the bike and set the idle to 1050 or so or until the idle stops surging.

I had a similar problem doing a reset on a friend's Uly. It ran OK until I did the TPS reset....then it ran like crap.

I found that the throttle plate had some carbon build up on it, the black hard gunk. I cleaned that with some carb cleaner, finding that the throttle plate was not closing all of the way due to carbon build up on the bottom edge of the plate. When it started to loosen up with the carb cleaner it felt a little 'crunchy' when closing it all of the way.

Once cleaned of the carbon, the reset worked great.

plus 1 to what Etennuly said. check for carbon and make sure its snapping all the way closed with the tps backed out good and far beyond the zero mark. Then reset tps. I like 975/1000 rpm idle. what I do is after the reset I go on a ride with the allen driver in hand to adjust once fully at riding temp to correct rpm. On my two different bikes one is a 4.8 @1000 rpm the other is 5.9 @1000 rpm both have different head work both have different compression ration.

clean and reset again.

I was just going to ask that question of 4.8. When I tunred down the idle to 1000 its at 4.8. I wanted to see if that was ok. It seened ride good there. But ikm still feeling a surge when off throttle or maintaning the throttle at times. Also should I do a AFV reset as well. And I'll look at the carbon build when I get a chance in the morning.

AFV reset wont hurt a thing. or just go on a nice smooth ride. cause the afv is always changing even when you dont see it. If you datalog a ride for aprox 1/2 hour and open that file with excel. you will see the afv values move around slightly every ride. this keeps the fuel even. thats what the O2 readdings from the ego arwe doing.

Another thing to try would be put a little slack in your throttle cable. It is possible that if it is a hair tight it might keep the throttle cracked during reset.

Ok I took it out for a 30mile ride. still surging. I also experianced backfiring or something while holding throttle steady at about 75 mph. It happened 5 times within minutes of each other.

I still havent cleaned the throttle late as I need to pick up carb cleaaner.

Something else to look at. Clean your battery leads, if you have battery issues it makes the ECM act funny. Better to eliminate the easy stuff than spend money and find out it was a bad ground.

Is there "ECM Spy for Dummies"? If so I need one...I'm not good with null point thinking.

I just got the ECM Spy running...reset my TPS...simple enough...engine off, headlight fuse out, key on, kill on...idle screw out...positive the throttle plate is completely closed...select diagnostic tab, click "reset tps"...turn in idle screw to 5.2...crank engine, warm engine up and set idle....not hard.

Now for the hard part...guide says reset AFV...I clicked "reset AFV"...it was at 100%...stayed at 100%....am I missing something??

Have some patience with an old carburetor tuner....I'm not dumb just inexperienced.

All I am looking to do is to EVENTUALLY get rid of that annoying azz surging.

100% is just a multiplication factor for the fuel values of each cell of the fuel map. 100% is no adjustment, 95% is slightly leaner, 105% is slightly richer. The ECM will adjust this value as the bike runs to adjust for temperature, altitude, etc.

Depends. The bike will compensate for various riding conditions and may enrichen or lean out the fuel mixture. Good luck getting your plug viewer to do that : )

Thanks for the explanation Sifo...I needed that...it's something I can use...And I can see how the value can change depending on the circumstances...so the system uses throttle position, entering air temperature, and exhaust oxygen level to determine the operation....small steps...interesting...no compensation for barometric pressure or way to measure actual air volume...no MAF or MAP sensors...so the maps provide a CALCULATED air flow quantity under different throttle positions and using temperature measurements to provide the fueling...

The 1125R has Baro and MAP sensors in addition to a front O2 since day one : )
