Hey Guys,
the bike in ? is a 2004 xb12R...

Just putting a front end on it from another bike , and went to Torque the Steering stem pinch bolt (SSPB)And was re using the bolts from the 2004 front end ,But the SSPB would not screw in ( too big ion Dia. )....

I think the top tree is from a 2003 xbr model (SSPB) and is smaller in size... Its the same size as the Lower fork clamp fasteners though...

So the 2004 being larger Dia. in size required torque of 17-19 ft. lbs... Which may be ok for that larger bolt of the 04`s, But I am sure wd. snap something IF I used that much torque on the smaller 2003 SSPB...

So what I did was torque the bolts to (13-15) the torque of the Lower fork clamp fasteners which is the same size as the 2003 SSPB...
What do ya think , will this be ok???

Is there anything else I should know about a 2003 Top triple tree compare to 2004 Top triple tree, both being R models???

Hope this makes sense to ya.

The service manual for the 2003 XB9R states the torque for the steering stem pinch bolt is 17-19 ft-lbs, it also says apply Loctite 272.
Do you think you could get to the low end of the torque spec (17 ft-lbs).
Thats what I have done, I am always thinking the triple will crack with the mid to high end of the torque range.
The engineers must have a reason for that torque value.

My 03 9R book says the steering stem pinch fastener is to have Loctite 272 applied and then torque to 17-19 ft-lbs, same goes for the fork pinch bolts on the top triple.

Putting the loctite a side....forget about that ...Just talking about the bolt sizes

the 2003 had a smaller dia. bolt than the 2004s thats why I think some have Broke their top trees on the 2003 I heard of maybe going to the spec of the 2004 and up
the bolt for the 2004 and up is alot bigger dia.

torque to 17-19 ft-lbs, same goes for the fork pinch bolts on the top triple.

are ya sure on that or ya meant the lower pinch bolts as the 2004 are higher torque for the upper larger bolts

No your right my book says 13-15 on the lowers and 17-19 uppers

But I guess where some were over torquing the 2003 top SSPB and breaking them they change the bolt to a larger dia in 2004 I hope thats the only difference in them
