My new to me 04 12S has a wobbly stand....

With the stand up or down I can move it side to side quite a bit.

When I use it I put it on the ground and pull the bike backwards to make sure it is fully locked forward. But the stand can still move side to side.

Is my stand about to break like alot of peoples have?

How (tight) are they normally?

Is this normal or signs of failure?

The thing to check is the bolts between the plate and the engine.
My 2008 broke one and damaged the other.
I didn't even notice!
I brought my uly in for unrelated work and they saw it.

The 04 stand mount was a defective design, and replacement bolts are not available.

You can fit an 05 or later, as I have done, or remove the stand and mounting plate, and fit a new bolt: needs a bit of modification.

Check knowledge vault or search for info on this, has been done many times.

There was a recall on this...right? Or was it a TSB? Either way, they updated the kickstand. I'm sure someone can chime in to confirm the recall rumor I'm spreading...

Check it out now, or you may find your bike napping on it's side!

Buell didn't do recalls very often, actually none that I can remember.

Little details like wheel bearings that failed, and totally inadequate spark plug wires and engine isolators where simply upgraded, and usually bundled with parts you didn't need.

In the case of the kickstand, not only did they not recall, (except for another earlier problem if I recall), but they stopped selling replacement parts, and made you buy an entire new kickstand.

In the case of the engine isolator, same thing, no recall, upgraded part was bundled with an expensive bolt you did not need.

Policy was probably set by the charming fellows at the Motor Company.

Interesting, I stand corrected. I just swear I read of people bringing their bikes into dealers and getting them fixed free of charge. Old age must have come early for me...

Nothing the matter with your memory, (yet), Nick.

Lots of items that failed, such as the stand and the front isolator may have been repaired free of charge, IF they failed under warranty.

Sometimes, things like a porous timing case, were fixed for almost nothing years after the warranty expired, (thanks Court:-).

That is slightly different than a recall.They just hated recalls.I could never understand why they never recalled the 2003 belt, which caused some pretty hairy moments when they failed. Doesn't appear anyone was killed, I will never understood why.

Since I live 125 miles from the nearest Buell dealer that I would let touch my machine, it was often easier for me to just buy the part, and install it myself than drive five hundred miles. That would have included the stand, the isolator, and some other items. Never could get them to just do a part exchange.

Of course my memory isn't that great either.

Because Barker has 50k+ miles on his without any issue? : )

Also there are many factors that determine if something is a recall. If it jeopardizes safety like improperly routed brake lines that rub against your tire causing the brake line to rupture, than yes there will be a recall.

There was a recall for the sidestand on the older Uly's, but I would have to check the NHTSA website to see if there was one on the XB's.

Looks like a recall on horns. A stupid recall, but apparently people outside NY use a horn instead of the finger.

2006 had 3 recalls on the Uly for the sidestand, the BAS, and the accessory windshield.

2007 had just the BAS on the Uly.

2008 and 2009 had the windshield on the XT/XP

2009 had the brake line reroute on ZTL2 models.

2010 had Uly footpeg brackets.

Let's not get into an argument about the 2003 belt.

It was an inadequate design, and was replaced after one model year.

Why do you think they did that?

There has been a great deal written about the failure of that belt, but suffice it to say it wasn't strong enough, and was replaced after one year and never recalled.

They invented some story about improper handling of the belt as if one could damage a tensile structure capable of transmitting 75 ft.lb.s of torque by twisting it a little in ones hands.

Impossible.

Especially since inspection of the failed belts always showed plastic yield. Try doing that with your bare hands.

Actually it is too bad it didn't work, because the design of the transmission system was actually better than later systems because the rear pulley was smaller and lighter, had less effect on the pole of moments, and looked better. The only snag was the belt was too weak, stretched, allowed water infiltration, and deterioration of the kevlar leading to tensile failure.

Don't get me started on this, ok?

As anyone who had one fail under load will tell you that it was not a pleasant experience.

I didn't argue anything about the belt. Anyway, yes I had a belt snap under load (wheelie), it wasn't an unpleasant experience. I put a new one on (lots of fun when you got the wrong belt), and am still riding with it. Got that? : )

(Oh and the 03 belt was fugly : D)

It says Potential number of units effected: 149. Does it cover em all?

My '05 XB9SX has the same problem, I wondered why it leaned over WAAAAAAY more than any other Buell I've ever owned. Is there a chance I could get it replaced under the recall?

As I said, Buell never made any significant recalls. The side stand recalls just recalled a few bikes. They were for a few failed stands, not the bolt that failed on virtually all of the early stands, and which could not be replaced. The Horn recall was thin beer at best.

Note that the bad oil pump gear, the 2003 belt, the early stand bolt, the black wheel bearings, the bad connector #77, which called many electrical failures, the Firebolt headlights, the crappy spark plug wires, or the early model front engine isolator were never recalled.

They should have been.

The pinging problem on the twelves was never officially addressed.

I replaced several of these items at my own expense.

These affected many, many bikes, and some of these failures were life threatening.

I guess a some of newbies just don't know about these items, and they are not going to find out about them from Buell documentation: that's the problem.

Of course, this failure to recall was not caused by the Buell Motorcycle Company. It was a policy created by Harley Davidson which has had a predatory approach to the end user, and their dealers who look at their customer pretty much the way a fox might regard a chicken coop.
