All,

My 09 Ss has about 1700 miles on the clock. So far, it looks like it's burning oil at the rate of about 1500-2000 miles/liter. I realize it's new and should tighten up a bit, but what is the normal consumption for a fully-broken in motor? FWIW, I use the 2010 oil check procedure (thanks Froggy) with the bike in the same place in the garage each time - so it's about as accurate as it's going to be with these bikes.

I'm mostly curious, not worried. However, my 10 year old boxer twin gets about 4000 miles/liter, and my 06 DR650 (which I just sold) was getting 18,000+ miles/liter (and had almost 20K on the clock).

Just took my 08Scg (2300 miles) in to the dealer Wednesday for the same thing. About a quart used since my 1000 mile service. Dealer said "it's normal for these engines to burn oil until their broken in", and said they'd do a diagnostic. If it was a warranty issue they'd cover the cost, if not, it was on me. ~$250 to do a compression check and leak down. Turned out the rear cylinder was at 16% compression. They pulled the heads to get them machined and new valve seals installed, and are honing the cylinders. All covered under the warranty.

I had a buddy with an 09ss that had the same valve seal issue a few months ago. I hadn't ride much over the winter, and started paying close attention to the oil level after hearing his issue.

I'd take it in. They won't take your word for the consumption, so they'll either do the compression and leak down test, or my buddy said they did an oil change for him and said to bring it back after 500 miles. He did and they confirmed that it was burning more than the limit that they consider acceptable.

Waiting to get mine back...hopefully next week to get riding again.

What I have learned on mine is that if I try to keep the oil topped off, I'll keep adding oil forever. If I keep it down around the first or second X on the dipstick, I never have to add any.

I'm noticing the same thing on my '09 SS. If I try to keep it topped off, it seems to use it, but if I leave it at the bottom of the dipstick, it will stay there. I have about 3200 miles so far.

This issue always comes up with new bikes...If it is truly USING oil, not from a problem with over fill....

IT IS NOT BROKEN IN YET....now I feel better....go run the hell out of it...at over 1000 miles it can handle it...it will either bed in or not...if it does....good...if not...take it back and have it leaked down...if the motor needs work....when you get it back....break it in properly....

My '04 12s has 11k miles....it uses NO oil between changes.

My '09 XT was using a quart every 200 to 250 miles. Dealer re-ringed at 1800 miles, and now after 1200 additional miles I can tell you that the consumption was 1 qt during that period. I expect this to improve? (see below) Just had it changed and will monitor. However, I expect the worst as I can smell "blow-by" while I'm riding. Smells like an old, oil sucking car from the '50s.

All - thanks. I'll keep monitoring it. As for the oil level, I've been adding no more than 200 ml when the level reaches the "add" line - I haven't been trying to "top it off." Like I said in my earlier post, not worried (yet) but was wondering what a normal consumption rate would be for a fully broken-in engine? My plan was to monitor it carefully through the first 5000 miles, which should be enough to really get a feel for whether or not something is wrong and for the consumption rate to start to level out.

About .5 to .75 of a quart between oil changes.

Thanks Terry. That sounds pretty reasonable.
